Summary

There’s something out there:
a juggernaut of evil bearing down to crush the Republicâ,
unless one lone Jedi, shunned and reviled, can stop it。

Revan: hero, traitor, conqueror, villain, savior。 A Jedi who left Coruscant to defeat Mandalorians and returned a disciple of the dark side, bent on destroying the Republic。 The Jedi Council gave Revan his life back, but the price of redemption was high。 His memories have been erased。 All that’s left are nightmares and deep, abiding fear。

What exactly happened beyond the Outer Rim? Revan can’t quite remember, yet can’t entirely forget。 Somehow he stumbled across a terrible secret that threatens the very existence of the Republic。 With no idea what it is, or how to stop it, Revan may very well fail, for he’s never faced a more powerful and diabolic enemy。 But only death can stop him from trying。

Excellent continuation of Revan’s exploits。 While I understand the need to tie it into the MMO, I was left disappointed with ending。 Would still recommend the book, however。

Maybe like a 3。5? Surprisingly violent and dark, but also good。 Quick read。

I really enjoyed Revan。 I've been hearing that I should read this book for ages, and the payoff was great once I actually got to it。 The concept of Revan's characters is so complex and unique。 I find the back-and-forth aspect really interesting。 Finishing this book made me want to learn more about his character, so I can't wait to get to more stories about both his past and future。 Excellent! Engaging read, but what seemed like a potentially major issue—rise and fall of Darth Traya—seems like a major problem reduced to a couple paragraphs。

Revan made me question how much I like Karpyshyn as an author。 It had none of the magic that the Darth Bane trilogy had and felt uninspired。 There were fun parts and interests but it felt like Drew was given an A and a B and lazily drew a line between。

I enjoyed the book but it was certainly an uneven read。 Some story lines were exciting and well written, others felt a little unclear in purpose。 Overall was a pretty fun read but mid tier for a SW novel I’d say。 Revan is a compelling character but I found his story a little unclear - partially by design partially by writing style。 I do want to find out what happens next so I suppose that’s the best outcome hahaI never played KOTOR video game。

Based on arguably the best Star Wars video game series ever created, Knights of the Old Republic, Revan fills in the gaps between the two installments。 Written by Drew Karpyshyn (The Darth Bane Trilogy) and originally published in 2011, The Old Republic: Revan focuses on one man’s quest to discover the truth about his past while attempting to keep the dark side at bay。The Old Republic: Revan begins two years after the events of Knights of the Old Republic and finds Revan living on Coruscant, hap Based on arguably the best Star Wars video game series ever created, Knights of the Old Republic, Revan fills in the gaps between the two installments。 Written by Drew Karpyshyn (The Darth Bane Trilogy) and originally published in 2011, The Old Republic: Revan focuses on one man’s quest to discover the truth about his past while attempting to keep the dark side at bay。The Old Republic: Revan begins two years after the events of Knights of the Old Republic and finds Revan living on Coruscant, happily married to Bastila Shan。 He’s not in great standing with the Jedi Order and keeps experiencing nightmares that he believes are a part of his erased past as a Sith Dark Lord。 Determined to discover the truth of his past, Revan sets out on a quest with the Mandalorians, on the hunt for the mask of Mandalore which he believes could help restore his memories。Meanwhile, on the planet Dromund Kaas, the Sith Empire has been rebuilt after being defeated by the Republic and a Sith Warrior named Scourge is caught in a battle of wills between members of the Sith Dark Council。 Scourge ends up in the employ of Darth Nyriss, a member of the council with grand plans to overthrow the Emperor himself。 These two plotlines exist separately for the first half of the book, but after everyone experiences a Force void planet named Nathema, plotlines begin to merge and that’s when things get really exciting。After a four year time jump, Revan ends up a prisoner of Scourge and his rescue becomes the focus of his old Jedi pal Meetra Surik, who promises Revan’s wife and now 3 year old son she’ll do her best to bring him home。 Realizing that the downfall of the Emperor is everyone’s goal, Scourge, Revan and Meetra team up, resulting in the complete annihilation of the Sith Dark Council。 Back stabbing ensues (quite literally) as the battle against the Emperor wages on。 You’ll have to read the book to find out just what goes down, who survives and what the future of the Republic looks like。The Old Republic: Revan is one of the most unique Star Wars books I’ve encountered。 Because it takes place thousands of years before the battle of Yavin, the Sith and Jedi of the book exist on a completely different plane。 The Sith of the novel are not the followers of the Sith religion, like Emperor Palpatine or Darth Vader, rather they are the race of the Sith, red-skinned humanoids who are skilled with dark side gifts and abilities。 Similarly, the Jedi Order looks and feels different, with the main character married and with a baby on the way。 These aspects all make for a very different type of reading experience, one that readers of the Expanded Universe are probably very familiar with。 If The Old Republic: Revan is your first experience in this portion of the non-canonical timeline like me, it might take you a moment to orient yourself and understand the state of the galaxy at this point in history。 I’d also suggest doing a little research on the storyline of the video games the book is based on, it will definitely help your comprehension。Having said all that, Revan is an immensely enjoyable novel, filled with twisty storylines and real human emotions。 Karpyshyn is an immensely skilled writer, drawing readers in with his knack for characters, flaws and all。 The novel revolves around the protagonist Revan of course, but he’s surrounded by a supporting cast of characters that are given the appropriate amount of page time and attention for them to affect the story in significant ways。 Because of the timeline this story takes place in, all of these characters are steeped in lore and history—from the Mandalorian to Sith, to Jedi— adding another level of depth that elevates the novel。 。。。more

[5/10]This was my first foray into the Star Wars literary universe, and I did enjoy the journey。 It has always amazed me how much content has been created for that long-ago far-far-away galaxy, and I have to give these Star Wars books credit for being pioneers in fandom and fan fiction in a much more mainstream way than most canons ever achieve。For me, this book fell short -- maybe not of my expectations, but certainly of my hopes。 I wanted so much out of a Star Wars book, and I'll grant you thi [5/10]This was my first foray into the Star Wars literary universe, and I did enjoy the journey。 It has always amazed me how much content has been created for that long-ago far-far-away galaxy, and I have to give these Star Wars books credit for being pioneers in fandom and fan fiction in a much more mainstream way than most canons ever achieve。For me, this book fell short -- maybe not of my expectations, but certainly of my hopes。 I wanted so much out of a Star Wars book, and I'll grant you this is the only one I've read (so far), but this one didn't deliver on my desire for a sweeping, emotionally complex Star Wars story。 I tend to be more drawn to character-driven stories in general, and this book was definitely more plot- and action-driven。 So while it was good, it just wasn't quite my cup of tea in the end。I'll admit too that from a writing standpoint, I was torn。 The actual technical style of the writing was very distracting for me -- all tell and no show。 The exposition felt clunky in a lot of ways, and sometimes the limited-third narrator switches bled into omniscience。 I also felt that on some occasions when characters made choices, I really didn't follow the logic。 They just kind of did stuff and then we were narrated reasons after。 That being said, I was completely blind-sided several times in the over-arching plot, which is always a plus in my mind since I don't like to be able to predict a storyline。One of the things I thoroughly enjoyed about this book (and there were a few) was the way it viewed The Force through the characters' lenses。 Each force-sensitive character has a unique relationship with and view of The Force, and draws on it in different ways。 The insights into the subtly distinct worldviews of Jedi vs。 Sith when it came to Force interaction were genuinely awesome, and several of Revan's Jedi-bent thoughts regarding emotions hit very close to home for me。Overall, I enjoyed this experience。 I'm unsure whether I'll continue, either in this specific timeline or into an adjacent Star Wars book space, even though this one did end on what could be considered a soft cliffhanger。 But if the mood strikes or if another Star Wars book comes highly recommended, I'm certainly open to the idea。 。。。more

For a book that's called "Revan", there is remarkable little Revan content in this book。 I still enjoyed it - the writing flows just fine, and the other characters were agreeable。 Especially after it kicks off after a few chapters, it's a very agreeable Star Wars adventure。 The plot was interesting。 But the ending left a sour taste in my mouth。 I think this book could have benefited from being longer, so it could actually deliver more on Revan, his struggles and his story in general。 Overall, st For a book that's called "Revan", there is remarkable little Revan content in this book。 I still enjoyed it - the writing flows just fine, and the other characters were agreeable。 Especially after it kicks off after a few chapters, it's a very agreeable Star Wars adventure。 The plot was interesting。 But the ending left a sour taste in my mouth。 I think this book could have benefited from being longer, so it could actually deliver more on Revan, his struggles and his story in general。 Overall, still an intriguing Star Wars story。 。。。more

I have never played "Knights of the Old Republic"; however, this book gives enough context to get what's going on or what has happened。But, I think I like "Deceived" slightly better。SPOILERSThe part with Veela and the fight in the tomb felt so weightless。There was no time to feel for their losses or a reason to join Canderous in his grief。There was a three year time jump, but it felt rushed with how it played out。。。I did like the story of the Sith Emperor and how he drained his home planet。Even I have never played "Knights of the Old Republic"; however, this book gives enough context to get what's going on or what has happened。But, I think I like "Deceived" slightly better。SPOILERSThe part with Veela and the fight in the tomb felt so weightless。There was no time to feel for their losses or a reason to join Canderous in his grief。There was a three year time jump, but it felt rushed with how it played out。。。I did like the story of the Sith Emperor and how he drained his home planet。Even though Revan loses, the story tries to end with a feeling of being in a stalemate。。。again, it felt like the story stopped in the middle, leaving me both puzzled on what materials I need to pursue next and disappointed with how it ended。Overall?Due to how often I will return to this book, I'll give it a generous 1。5 out of 5。 。。。more

Drew Karpyshyn always does a masterful job of writing interesting Sith characters。 This book is no exception to that。 A great story that keeps getting better as it progresses!

I am so torn with this book。 As a lifelong fan of the KOTOR games, it was nice to get one more (non-SWTOR) story about this cast of characters。 On the other hand - this kind of felt like KOTOR2 - an incredible set up, great characters, but clunky and a largely disappointing end。 I felt captivated by the first 300 pages, I felt like I was reading a script of a KOTOR game。 There was solid intrigue, great characters old-and-new, good action and plenty of deceit。 Specifically the first half of this I am so torn with this book。 As a lifelong fan of the KOTOR games, it was nice to get one more (non-SWTOR) story about this cast of characters。 On the other hand - this kind of felt like KOTOR2 - an incredible set up, great characters, but clunky and a largely disappointing end。 I felt captivated by the first 300 pages, I felt like I was reading a script of a KOTOR game。 There was solid intrigue, great characters old-and-new, good action and plenty of deceit。 Specifically the first half of this novel which serves as a bridge between the original two games was great and helped to clarify gaps found during KOTOR2。 The second half had a lot of gripping action and great promise for the ending。 See the heroes all team up is something I dreamed of playing the games and it felt like we were going to have a great pay off。 However, in the last ten pages I realized that this book was never about glorifying the characters I grew up with and loved。 Meetra specifically meets a very disappointing end。 In a Doctor Strange Avengers Infinity War move, Scourage sours and ends our heroes journeys for the greater good。 What this really was, was not a continuation of KOTOR。 It was a prelude to SWTOR。 This has plenty of action and was an easy, casual read, it was not satisfying at the end。 Causal Star Wars fans will like this, KOTOR fans will enjoy the trip down memory lane but I was left wanting after this one。 。。。more

Overall good book。 Decent story。 It definitely was a bit slow in the beginning, wondering what the overarching plot would be。 However the last hundred pages were enthralling。 Interesting characters, Revan was definitely one that could have more narrative。

I’ve noticed that people either love this or hate it and I think it depends on where you learn about Revan。 Those who get to know Revan through the video game Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic have a high expectations that clearly weren’t met。 For me, it was my first time reading about him so I enjoyed myself quite a bit, though I would love to see more of Darth Revan。 There were definitely some parts that were a little slow and the ending came out of nowhere but overall I had fun。
