I had really mixed feelings about this book。 It's basically Canterbury Tales in Space。 I had to push through parts of the book but the ending was a really enjoyable twist。 I had really mixed feelings about this book。 It's basically Canterbury Tales in Space。 I had to push through parts of the book but the ending was a really enjoyable twist。 。。。more

An epic far in the future between stars。。 The one star left is because I thought it was shorter than it should have。Brilliant story telling that grips you from the first chapter till the end。

Told through various character's stories of their journey; each with their own style that feels like a separate genre。 Despite the eclectic nature, I enjoyed all but one which is surprising that it was only one and not most of the stories。 Told through various character's stories of their journey; each with their own style that feels like a separate genre。 Despite the eclectic nature, I enjoyed all but one which is surprising that it was only one and not most of the stories。 。。。more

Hyperion starts off almost as a sci-fi pastiche of The Canterbury Tales。 A group of travelers on a pilgrimmage share their life stories night after night as they travel towards their final destination: the Time Tombs on the planet Hyperion。 Unlike our original pilgrims, these know that most of those who meet the Shrike -- the mysterious and violent god-like being they are doomed to meet -- will die at its hands。 The novel makes several other literary allusions: to Keats and other Romantic poets, Hyperion starts off almost as a sci-fi pastiche of The Canterbury Tales。 A group of travelers on a pilgrimmage share their life stories night after night as they travel towards their final destination: the Time Tombs on the planet Hyperion。 Unlike our original pilgrims, these know that most of those who meet the Shrike -- the mysterious and violent god-like being they are doomed to meet -- will die at its hands。 The novel makes several other literary allusions: to Keats and other Romantic poets, to the Akeidah (known more commonly as "the Binding of Isaac"), to The Wizard of Oz。 All of these are handled with both depth and humor。 The writing isn't awful, but it's not quite up to the level of polish I would have expected given the insightful literary allusions。 There's some unnecessarily graphic sex, a lot of men getting so afraid that their testicles retreat (at least three times in a single book--really?), all the women are gorgeous and sexy, and there are some newbie-ish narrative choices: some of the inset stories are written in third person close, some in first person, yet they are all presented as the pilgrims telling their stories。 Also: the dialogue is a bit clumsy in places。There are reflections about the nature of life and death, the nature of sacrifice, the nature of choice, the nature of time, and empire-building。 There are some environmentalist ideas, too。 I can't tell too much about the world building, because there are parts that are revealed at strategic times。 The overall impression is of a big-idea, almost literary fiction story hidden in a book which appears on the surface to be pulpy。 Interestingly, this is a novel of the far future with both Jewish and Palestinian representation--and there doesn't seem to be side-taking。 I'm going to guess that Simmons is a proud but secular Jew based on this, but I have no evidence except for the text itself and that there are a lot of Jewish people with the last name "Simmons", "Simons", "Simonson", etc。 As someone who is Orthodox, I was intrigued by some of the ideas in the book--I disagree with them, but they aren't presented in a disrespectful, unilateral (we're told all along that there are different kinds of Jews other than the ones we meet), or superficial way。Definitely recommended, with the caveat that there's foul language, sex on page, and a lot of graphic violence。 The first one is necessitated by the characterization of at least one character and the last is by the themes of the story。 The middle is just。。。the influence of the male gaze and the desire to titillate (except possibly in one scene)。 。。。more

10 outta 10, book of the yearI effing love this book。 Each character is more captivating。 Each chapter has its own unique, exhilarating, thrilling or excruciating tone。 All of this on top of an ever-so-interesting world and suspenseful plot。 A glorious masterpiece。

Enjoyed this book。 A mixture of fantasy and science fiction。 As a fan of science fiction, I wish it had leaned more in this direction。 Not a page turner, but I enjoyed it to the end。 Left me mildly interest to read the sequels。

I enjoyed this book, but。。。 >it's very long >while individually engaging, it's seven separate stories, requiring explanation and partial world building for each >after the time and character investment, I have to read the next in the series (which I will)。If you are willing to invest the time and patience to reach the intertwining of the various lives, the payoff is quite spectacular。 You do have to read to the end to see the purpose, but Wow!Way better than Pilgrims Progress!! This is a great book even though I spent the majority of my time reading it being super confused。 There is a lot of technical jargon, which you have to keep reading to get a grasp on and even then you'll probably be a bit confused。 It comes together in the end, though, and all the confusion is well worth it。 The stories of these "pilgrims" is addictive, each and every story is unique。 It's difficult not to root for them and easy to get into the characters。 I was particularly taken with Sol Weint This is a great book even though I spent the majority of my time reading it being super confused。 There is a lot of technical jargon, which you have to keep reading to get a grasp on and even then you'll probably be a bit confused。 It comes together in the end, though, and all the confusion is well worth it。 The stories of these "pilgrims" is addictive, each and every story is unique。 It's difficult not to root for them and easy to get into the characters。 I was particularly taken with Sol Weintraub's story and I NEED him to persevere! I knew that this was part of a series but I was hoping it would be somewhat self-contained, not end with a huge cliffhanger! Look at me!)So this book。 The story is basically surrounding these seven pilgrims in our distant future travelling to a planet called Hyperion to see this thing called the Shrike, and on the way our characters tell each other their stories。 But the plot of this book does not even take place。 It is a set up for book two, in that we get to know each of the characters and arrive at the destination, only in the last few pages。 For someone who is not a huge character reader, this was a touch jarring to me。 But who were the characters? Well, I will describe them and their stories in my own style。 Wait, first I have picture of them, then I will talk about them: Image: "Seven Pilgrims of the Final Shrike Pilgrimage" by Aleksander Obradovic on ArtStationThe first character is Het Masteen who is an android and。。。 a tree man? I don't know, there was something to do with trees。 Something about Yggdrasil, you know the Norse tree thingy。 The next character is Sol Weintraub whose story was mostly about his daughter (see the little baby?) whose life becomes a fusion of 50 First Dates and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button。 I'm not sure if I should say exactly what happens, but if you've read it, you know。 After him there is Martin Silenus who is a poet (and he *profanity* *profanity* knows it) and he likes to say bad words。 A lot。 There is even a part of the book where his entire vocabulary is limited to f*ck, sh*t, piss, c*nt, Goddamn, motherf*cker, asshole, peepee and poopoo。 It is hilarious。 Then there is Fedmahn Kassad who is a Colonel in the army for the goodies who fight against the baddies and he really likes to take breaks in between major battles to have multiple sexy times with this random chick he has never met before while his troops are dying around him。 Decent bloke。 Next to him is the Consul, who does。。。 something? Oh, he drinks a bunch, as does Silenus。 He has a cool hat on and is actually one of the most compelling characters, despite my lacklustre description of him。 Following there is the Female。 She is different because she has woman parts and is not a man。 Nah, I'm just kidding。 Her name is Brawne Lamia and she is a private investigator, which is really dope。 Her story is about her meeting android John Keats (I swear that Dan Simmons is obsessed with Keats, because there are so many references to him in this book) and solving a murder mystery which leads into some interesting stuff。 And lastly there is Father Lenar Hoyt who is a Catholic priest and his story is about, well, not him at all。 There are some tiny people who I couldn't stop thinking of as Oompa Loompas。 Most of the characters actually have a pretty romance heavy plot line, which I wasn't expecting, and the majority of the stories are pretty fast moving (except the first) for a classic。(Ok update: just got a text that All Blacks won 19-17, so yay, but apparently it was a terrible game) So that was Hyperion。 It doesn't really feel like I have read an actual book, because plot didn't really happen, but that is more or less the intent。 Now I will have to pick up The Fall of Hyperion begrudgingly if not anticipatorily (yes I checked, it's real) to finally get some plot, but from what I can gather, book 2 may me more up my ally。 I think the lack of said plot in Hyperion is what's holding me back from giving it a full 5 stars, but I understand and respect that most people are character readers, and for them this would be the perfect book。 。。。more

Ok, not greatEach of the main characters in this book have a long discursive discussions of their past and the sequence of events that brought them to the present time。 My main disappointment was, of course with the ending which I shall not describe at this point in time other than to say it’s indecipherable and inconclusive。 Overall I felt the plot could be much more cohesive and propulsive than what was presented。

Whan that Aprill, with his shoures soote…A reformatting of the Tales of Caunterbury, it’s not particularly original but it IS well written。 Volume one has a non-ending, not even a cliffhanger。 MAYBE something is about to happen when the book ends with the protagonists hying themselves off to see the Wizard, but we don’t know。 I enjoyed it enough to continue with volume two。
