Summary

A breakthrough in human cloning becomes one woman’s waking nightmare in a mind-bending thriller by the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Gibson Vaughn series。

In the near future, advances in medicine and quantum computing make human cloning a reality。 For the wealthy, cheating death is the ultimate luxury。 To anticloning militants, it’s an abomination against nature。 For young Constance “Con” D’Arcy, who was gifted her own clone by her late aunt, it’s terrifying。

After a routine monthly upload of her consciousness—stored for that inevitable transition—something goes wrong。 When Con wakes up in the clinic, it’s eighteen months later。 Her recent memories are missing。 Her original, she’s told, is dead。 If that’s true, what does that make her

The secrets of Con’s disorienting new life are buried deep。 So are those of how and why she died。 To uncover the truth, Con is retracing the last days she can recall, crossing paths with a detective who’s just as curious。 On the run, she needs someone she can trust。 Because only one thing has become clear: Con is being marked for murder—all over again。

Wow, what a twister!Such a well written and enjoyable mystery! I could not predict each plot twist, and my insides twisted at some of the choices of the author, but they were all wonderful。 What a page turner!

😩 I’m fairly mixed。 Nothing happens until chapter 4 (I’d almost DNF’d) but once “the thing” happened I was hooked and reading ravenously… until the story started to pitter and dart off in various directions that I wasn’t too excited about, only to divert more (rather than regroup)。 These additional pathways/angles didn’t interest me and the book quickly stopped being “a book” and turned into a big “setup” — I didn’t have to look to see if there was going to be a #2 because how this book was goin 😩 I’m fairly mixed。 Nothing happens until chapter 4 (I’d almost DNF’d) but once “the thing” happened I was hooked and reading ravenously… until the story started to pitter and dart off in various directions that I wasn’t too excited about, only to divert more (rather than regroup)。 These additional pathways/angles didn’t interest me and the book quickly stopped being “a book” and turned into a big “setup” — I didn’t have to look to see if there was going to be a #2 because how this book was going it was obvious there was going to be multiple novels。 🥱 While there was a chunk of the book I really liked, and I found overall this book gave me a lot to think about, I left it underwhelmed, annoyed, and unexcited to read more。 sigh。 😔 SUMMARY: sometime in the future we have clones。 The country (no surprise) is divided on them (some states prohibit/don’t recognize clones as people)。 Mostly only the Uber wealthy (eg A-list celebrities, tech, and private billionaires) can have/afford them。 Con is the exception。 Although she’s a “poor musician” her estranged aunt was the scientist behind cloning and gifted her a copy。On Dec 26 Con goes for her scheduled “upload” and *bam* wakes up 18 mos later as her clone。Not only does Con have no memory of the last 18 months, clones aren’t supposed to have more than 30 (?) days lag bc it causes rejection/psychosis。 Moreover, everyone at the lab is confused and freaking out over this… and then Con has to literally run for her Life before she’s terminated by them。Out in the real word, Con is hungry, without money, and barely operational。 Her body has no muscle memory making even the most basic movements (like swallowing) difficult。 She’s also scared—she’s being chased by goons AND there’s an anti-clone movement that would happily “string her up。”Things get worse: she starts to learn what happened in the last 18mos and none of it makes sense。 She’s married, for example, and moved to another state。 Her best friend is also her enemy, and so on。 Oh and her aunt mysteriously died too, the famous scientist and there’s been all sorts of “conspiracy theories” about that involving the new CEO。This means Con doesn’t know who to trust I helping her find out answers about herself and how she ended up like this。 She also wants to know if the “real Con” is dead or alive。The book is so scattered and goes off in so many directions this summary is becoming impossible to write without rewriting the entire hook。 I’ll say that by the end you kind of know who to trust 🥴 and what happened 🥴I paid for the audio but this is included w/ kindle unlimited 。。。more

Fun book with original story concept。 My only criticism is the overuse of describing the race of so many characters where it was such an unnecessary factor。 Of course it is relevant and adds something from time to time (ie “the bouncer was a large black man” 。。。 that paints a picture)。 But the other overused it。 The white women at the hotel front desk。 The black man who crossed the street。 The white man at the bank。 None of those last 3 are actual quotes but you get the picture。 Aside from those Fun book with original story concept。 My only criticism is the overuse of describing the race of so many characters where it was such an unnecessary factor。 Of course it is relevant and adds something from time to time (ie “the bouncer was a large black man” 。。。 that paints a picture)。 But the other overused it。 The white women at the hotel front desk。 The black man who crossed the street。 The white man at the bank。 None of those last 3 are actual quotes but you get the picture。 Aside from those periodic annoyances, a good read :) 。。。more

Fantastic Definitely one to read。 Great storyline so totally different。 Suspense, Detective, Thriller with a bit of futuristic Sci fi all rolled into one

Why is race mentioned so much? The story was compelling and well told。 But there’s something strange about this book。 I read a lot and it very rare that the author addresses race in any one person (unless that’s what the book is about), let alone every person we come across。 Why is every single person (even people that are hardly characters) “a black man” or “a white woman” … it has nothing to do with the story and was really irritating。

Well that was a wild ride for me, so I can only imagine how Constance must feel! I could not put it down。 Constance “Con” is a protagonist that is memorable。 She at times is a little too curious for her own good, but she is also fearless and resilient。 She must face discrimination and bigotry as a clone at the same time she deals with the ethics of being a clone herself。 Mr。 FitzSimmons takes the reader through ethical and philosophical questions on cloning intertwined in the story and dialogue of his various characters。 Also, and no small part of the story is an intricate crime mystery that has so many twists and surprises I could not stop turning the pages。 Throw in some great rock band references and I was hooked。 This book does not end with a cliffhanger, but there is an open question at the end of the story and the promise of a second book to come。 I cannot wait!I highly recommend this dystopian sci-fi mystery! 。。。more

I thought this was a slightly entertaining read, with a few caveats。 The premise of a clone finding out about her missing original was an interesting premise, and it was fun to go through confusion and discovery with the main character。 The bits that raked were the sudden flood of explanations at the end, instead of the slow drip throughout the book, making it feel rushed to complete and close out the story。 The other was lack of detail, for instance when Constance's clone finally picks up a gui I thought this was a slightly entertaining read, with a few caveats。 The premise of a clone finding out about her missing original was an interesting premise, and it was fun to go through confusion and discovery with the main character。 The bits that raked were the sudden flood of explanations at the end, instead of the slow drip throughout the book, making it feel rushed to complete and close out the story。 The other was lack of detail, for instance when Constance's clone finally picks up a guitar, it does mention relearning motor ability, but the clone also doesn't have years of calluses on her fingertips, so she really would have to begin again to get good enough to play again (especially the 10-hour session mentioned)。 The anti-rejection drugs seemed very important at the beginning, but not carried through。 I would recommend this book as a light, entertaining read。 。。。more

I had high hopes for this book, I found the premise intriguing。 There are some observations made about a future where the defined technology would be applied that were extremely well thought out。 Unfortunately, what I thought would happen did, it was predictable。 It did have a twist, but that was scattered in my opinion and just too abstract。 Lastly, the heroine was too self centered and absorbed in her own predicament for me to connect with her。 I think this may have been a better short story。
