Summary

On 21 June 1922 Count Alexander Rostov – recipient of the Order of Saint Andrew, member of the Jockey Club, Master of the Hunt – is escorted out of the Kremlin, across Red Square and through the elegant revolving doors of the Hotel Metropol。

But instead of being taken to his usual suite, he is led to an attic room with a window the size of a chessboard。 Deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the Count has been sentenced to house arrest indefinitely。

While Russia undergoes decades of tumultuous upheaval, the Count, stripped of the trappings that defined his life, is forced to question what makes us who we are。 And with the assistance of a glamorous actress, a cantankerous chef and a very serious child, Rostov unexpectedly discovers a new understanding of both pleasure and purpose。

A book about count alexander llyich rostov being sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol Hotel because of a poem he (actually find out later a friend) wrote with revolutionary undertones。 I found this book to be very creative and lively written, with quite a bit a satire。 It was a bit to follow on audio book and the satire felt like The Master and Margarita。 Themes of imprisonment, freedom and purpose, change/adaptation, friendship/family/love, chance/luck/fat, bolshevism/class struggle。 a goo A book about count alexander llyich rostov being sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol Hotel because of a poem he (actually find out later a friend) wrote with revolutionary undertones。 I found this book to be very creative and lively written, with quite a bit a satire。 It was a bit to follow on audio book and the satire felt like The Master and Margarita。 Themes of imprisonment, freedom and purpose, change/adaptation, friendship/family/love, chance/luck/fat, bolshevism/class struggle。 a good summary: https://www。litcharts。com/lit/a-gentl。。。 。。。more

Highly recommend, for a number of reasons。 It's like epic Russian literature。。。。*but* it's American, so without the depression。 Highly recommend, for a number of reasons。 It's like epic Russian literature。。。。*but* it's American, so without the depression。 。。。more

It is a rarity these days to open a book and be both so engrossed in the intricacies of it’s characters that when the chapter ends you have almost forgotten where you are。 To also walk away having been forced to grapple with your own concepts of humanity, parenting, freedom, aging, romance, politics, aristocracy, the nuance of culture and politeness, the significance and influence of history, art, literature, and music over the ravages of time, and to examine your own views of wisdom, patience, It is a rarity these days to open a book and be both so engrossed in the intricacies of it’s characters that when the chapter ends you have almost forgotten where you are。 To also walk away having been forced to grapple with your own concepts of humanity, parenting, freedom, aging, romance, politics, aristocracy, the nuance of culture and politeness, the significance and influence of history, art, literature, and music over the ravages of time, and to examine your own views of wisdom, patience, and the true purposes of one’s life。。。is literature of the sort that changes people。 To say that it was well written, brilliant, humorous, and insightful does not do it justice。 It has renewed my hope that a modern novel in this day and age can compete with the classics。“。。。life does not proceed by leaps and bounds。 It unfolds。 At any given moment, it is the manifestation of a thousand transitions。 Our faculties wax and wane, our experiences accumulate, and our opinions evolve-if not glacially, then at least gradually。 Such that the events of an average day are as likely to transform who we are as a pinch of pepper is to transform a stew。” 。。。more

I hated giving it back to the library。 I wanted to move in with the Count。 I resented his "daughter" Sofia。 When is the movie coming out?Must Read! Historical fiction account of a man condemned to house arrest for the rest of his life in a hotel。 He is able to learn of major events as they happened in Russia as the years progressed。

Enjoyable character fiction with deeper subtexts about relationships, purpose and being a gentleman。

A pure pleasure。 I loved this from the very start and never wanted it to end。 Wish I had picked it up sooner。

I think this may have been one of those cases where the book was oversold to me。 The characters were likable, the story pleasant and the writing style friendly。 It was interesting to learn a little more about Russian culture。 However, it also tended to drag a bit。 I was never able to truly get lost in the story, I always remembered I was reading。

It took me two tries, two years apart to finish this book。While the writing is lovely in its cinematic description, there really isn't a story。 There are characters who pop up throughout the book as they come in and out of the main character's life, but there is no thru-line of a plot。I abandoned the print book two years ago。 I got through the audiobook (on 1。75 speed) because I am stubborn。 It took me two tries, two years apart to finish this book。While the writing is lovely in its cinematic description, there really isn't a story。 There are characters who pop up throughout the book as they come in and out of the main character's life, but there is no thru-line of a plot。I abandoned the print book two years ago。 I got through the audiobook (on 1。75 speed) because I am stubborn。 。。。more

This book was grand and sweeping which should be impossible given its subject matter。 The dialogue was intelligent and enjoyable and the history was informative。 The characters were so likeable and you had to root for them--especially Count Rostov。 Loved ever minute! 5 stars。

Delightful!

I liked the protagonist but this book dragged。 The first 50-100 pages were enjoyable but after that I just couldn't wait to finish。 I resisted picking it up and struggled with the pages and pages of not much happening。 I liked the protagonist but this book dragged。 The first 50-100 pages were enjoyable but after that I just couldn't wait to finish。 I resisted picking it up and struggled with the pages and pages of not much happening。 。。。more

I had a hard time getting into the story/book。 By about half way I was warming up and by the end I did like how the story ended and how it all tied together。 Not something I probably would have picked up but had heard it was a great book。 Glad I gave it a chance。

Mark

Excellent writing though the plot picks up only toward the end of the book。 Until then it reads like a fictionalized memoir。

It's hard to write a book about Soviet Russia--especially early Soviet Russia--that doesn't make you want to fall over in despair。 That's not to say that this lies about reality, it just allows reality to peek through a life in a way that is telling, but not paralyzing。 Truly a charming novel that puts the beauty and darkness of the Russian spirit on display。 It's hard to write a book about Soviet Russia--especially early Soviet Russia--that doesn't make you want to fall over in despair。 That's not to say that this lies about reality, it just allows reality to peek through a life in a way that is telling, but not paralyzing。 Truly a charming novel that puts the beauty and darkness of the Russian spirit on display。 。。。more

It took me a while to get into it, but once I did, I really enjoyed it。

A winding narrative best suited for those who want a taste of Russia even though it may lack some of the authenticity。 The author's writing style betrays the narrative at parts consequently having the reader experience a scene from the perspective of an outsider versus the insider they are intending to portray。 With that said, some scene were entertaining though not enough to stand out after the first read。 Worth a read if you like the subject matter and the plot description。 A winding narrative best suited for those who want a taste of Russia even though it may lack some of the authenticity。 The author's writing style betrays the narrative at parts consequently having the reader experience a scene from the perspective of an outsider versus the insider they are intending to portray。 With that said, some scene were entertaining though not enough to stand out after the first read。 Worth a read if you like the subject matter and the plot description。 。。。more

O carte foarte buna cu o acțiune pe măsură。 Mi-a luat ceva timp s-o termin, dar chiar și așa finalul a fost pe măsură, cu toate că mă așteptam cumva sa se termine altfel。

It’s a slow read, but beautifully written。

A Gentleman in Moscow is such a heartwarming story。 All the historical fictions I have read so far have been great, but quite frankly depressing。 This was such a breath of fresh air because I found more joy rather than sadness while reading it。Majority of the book takes place inside of the Metropol Hotel and I didn't expect to see this much happening in one setting。 This quote perfectly describes my feelings, "within those four walls the world had come and gone"。 All the characters in this book A Gentleman in Moscow is such a heartwarming story。 All the historical fictions I have read so far have been great, but quite frankly depressing。 This was such a breath of fresh air because I found more joy rather than sadness while reading it。Majority of the book takes place inside of the Metropol Hotel and I didn't expect to see this much happening in one setting。 This quote perfectly describes my feelings, "within those four walls the world had come and gone"。 All the characters in this book are so charming and wonderful, my favorites are Count Alexander and Sofia。 The found family trope is executed brilliantly in this book。 By the end of the book, the Count felt like an old friend。 。。。more

Sometimes you stumble upon a book that you do not want to end。 You find yourself turning each page slower and slower to savor the moments and the characters, because you hate to let them go。 Beautifully written, almost lyrical。 A must read。

Sublime! I loved this book so much that I gave it to all my friends for Christmas, and they loved it to。 An enchanting, gentle, kind story despite the Russian revolutionary backdrop。 Perfect for a pandemic lockdown read! This book has become one of my all-time favourites。

4。5 out of 5 stars。Such a good book - - it read like a fairy tale。 I loved the way it was written, with its humorous tone, asides and callbacks interspersed with poignancy and tension。 I was not ready for it to end。
