Summary

A young prince must rely on a mysterious stranger to save him when he is kidnapped during his coming-of-age tour in this swoony adventure that is The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue meets Pirates of the Caribbean。

Prince Tal has long awaited his coming-of-age tour。 After spending most of his life cloistered behind palace walls as he learns to keep his forbidden magic secret, he can finally see his family’s kingdom for the first time。 His first taste of adventure comes just two days into the journey, when their crew discovers a mysterious prisoner on a burning derelict vessel。

Tasked with watching over the prisoner, Tal is surprised to feel an intense connection with the roguish Athlen。 So when Athlen leaps overboard and disappears, Tal feels responsible and heartbroken, knowing Athlen could not have survived in the open ocean。

That is, until Tal runs into Athlen days later on dry land, very much alive, and as charming—and secretive—as ever。 But before they can pursue anything further, Tal is kidnapped by pirates and held ransom in a plot to reveal his rumored powers and instigate a war。 Tal must escape if he hopes to save his family and the kingdom。 And Athlen might just be his only hope…

Thank you to Edelweiss for an ARC; All my opinions are my own。Okay guys, I LOVED this! I read this in the span of four hours。 I loved every second。 It was fast paced, a little thin on the details because of it, but all adventure and magic and love! I couldn’t be mad at that。 Insta love isn’t always my thing but in this case it was so butterfly-inducing I couldn’t help it。

This book was wonderful to read。 I’ve never read any of F。T。 Likens other books, but after reading In Deeper Water I truly want to pick up more by them! Wonderful book! I loved how the characters were written, with their differing personalities and goals, which made them complex and relatable。 Reminds me, to some extent, of a more light-hearted Song of Achilles, in that there is a romance that is very important to the main character, but that romance isn't the sole focus of the book。 Wonderful book! Tal is an absolute sweetheart and Athlen is a mischievous vagabond surrounded by mystery。 I was glued to the pages as they interacted, so in love with their dialogue。 There were some plot twists I didn’t see coming at all and was wildly delighted by them! The storyline was simple yet full of depth and was enjoyable。 The experience was so good。 The writing was well done。 The ending stressed me out and I cried more。 This book mad me smile like a fool and curl my toes in delight。 I shed tears for the hearts of these characters and the way the author expressed them。 I was genuinely saddened to learn the book is a standalone because I’d love for it to be a series。 I’ll miss Tal and Athlen and the family so much。 。。。more

This book was so fun。 Mermaids, magic, adventure, and some of my favorite tropes。 I am a sucker for hiding magical powers as an allegory for hiding another part of yourself! That said, the pacing was a bit off for me。 Moments of action would be rushed only to have long stretches in between where nothing seemed to happen。 The relationship between Tal and Athlen suffered from the same problem。

2。5 StarsThe beginning of In Deeper Waters left a bit to be desired。 I felt the secondary characters were not very fleshed out; to the point they felt like cardboard copies of every other YA character。 The dialogue felt uninspired, the world underdeveloped, the story/plot slightly confusing in its unclarity in order to try to create problems/surprise the reader with revelations。 I don't know about you, but I like it when the story flows a bit more seamlessly。 It felt truly like the point of the 2。5 StarsThe beginning of In Deeper Waters left a bit to be desired。 I felt the secondary characters were not very fleshed out; to the point they felt like cardboard copies of every other YA character。 The dialogue felt uninspired, the world underdeveloped, the story/plot slightly confusing in its unclarity in order to try to create problems/surprise the reader with revelations。 I don't know about you, but I like it when the story flows a bit more seamlessly。 It felt truly like the point of the book was the romance and the rest was just window dressing--which eh, for fantasy to be done right you need a BIT more。The middle is good, focuses more on Prince Tal and the hardships he has to endure while having been kidnapped。 The other thing it focuses on is building the relationship between Tal and Athlen--which is super cute and where most of my enjoyment came from。 I rolled my eyes a lot because Athlen's "secret" is so obvious, and Tal keeps from asking him about his survival after he throws himself into the ocean (probably to keep the mystery alive) which irritates me because that would be the only thing I would want to know in his shoes。In the end once we are surrounded by a larger cast of characters is when I feel my interest began to ebb。 The other characters are just not very interesting, and it felt like we kept them around just because we had to at this point。 In Deeper Waters also left a pretty major question unanswered when it came to Athlen, and ends with the prettiest bow known to man kind。 I feel this will be one of those books I forget in a couple of weeks。 The idea of the book was better than the execution。 。。。more

Dominitating that element? As for Athlen, I don’t know if what he is considered a spoiler, but even with him I felt under explored。 The ending, again, felt rather wanting。 Wanting to know what happened to his family…like he literally cannot be the last one。 What happens when he dies…do they become extinct? Like the war plot…I—, him being the last mage (we could’ve an all out fight…)…The thing is that it had its moments of what could’ve been。 Tal’s talk about the slipper slope of using his magic and being a weapon for his family, in defense of his family。 Of Athlen and his fear of being left behind。 The significance of him showing Tal something so personal before he even showed Dara, which he has know for far longer。 (Reminds me of MDZS and the ribbon, I am a sucker for romance in the little details。)Even their romance, it started off good and then things happened which you can understand and infer but it left the romance as a beginning, suspended whilst angst happened, and then suddenly we’re in love? One thing that romance, in general, needs to do better is the fact that as a reader we should know why two (or more) characters fall in love with each other。 It shouldn’t only be that we get told these two (or more) are in love and we take it as face value。 Despite all of this, I did enjoy it。 It was light, and not something I needed to follow closely in fear of missing a clue or foreshadowing, or a twist that would have me grasping at what I’d missed。 I did like that Tal had to fight back after literally getting tortured。 I wished more “hero” characters did what needed to be done。 Though of course he had guilt after and I wished we could explore doing necessary things without feeling like you’re a monster or evil。 One step at a time, I guess。 In all, it does have moments of torture and high actions, but overall it isn’t an overwhelming read。 I’d say this is a good fantasy read when you’re in the mood for…。NOT high fantasy。 This is like when you’re trying to dip your toes back in and kind of simmer there for a bit before plunging all in。 (view spoiler)[**Some hmmm moments SPOILERS LOOK AWAY *** Cat shifter not recognizing Tal later on… The whole plot of having 23 year old Garrett almost marrying a 17-year old?
