Summary

Four famous siblings throw an epic party to celebrate the end of the summer。 But over the course of twenty-four hours, their lives will change forever。

Malibu: August, 1983。 It’s the day of Nina Riva’s annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch。 Everyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit。 Together, the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over—especially as the offspring of the legendary singer, Mick Riva。

The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself, who never wanted to be the center of attention, and who has also just been very publicly abandoned by her pro tennis player husband。 Oh, and maybe Hud—because it is long past time to confess something to the brother from whom he’s been inseparable since birth。

Jay, on the other hand, is counting the minutes until nightfall, when the girl he can’t stop thinking about promised she’ll be there。

And Kit has a couple secrets of her own—including a guest she invited without consulting anyone。

By midnight the party will be completely out of control。 By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames。 But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family’s generations will all come bubbling to the surface。

Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a family: the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them 。 。 。 and what they will leave behind。

This was my 3rd TJR book and I'm so glad that I finally feel like I can give one of her books 5 stars! The other two were amazing but I had my problems with them, but Malibu Rising? This was everything that I wanted, and then more! Can't wait for the author's next book!!!No thoughts head empty, just filled with love for every single sibling in this book and feeling super happy and warm now ☀️ (although I'm sure we can all agree that Nina was the bestest girl ever, she has my whole entire heart) This was my 3rd TJR book and I'm so glad that I finally feel like I can give one of her books 5 stars! I really enjoyed reading Malibu Rising。 The story and plot development kept me turning pages and made the book hard to put down。 I thought the overarching message of fate and following in the footsteps of one’s ancestry was apparent and easy to follow。 However, I think the characters were far too two-dimensional and directly characterized。 The author left no room for unique interpretations, sort of blatantly stating things as they were。 The concept in general was interesting and I would recommen I really enjoyed reading Malibu Rising。 The story and plot development kept me turning pages and made the book hard to put down。 I thought the overarching message of fate and following in the footsteps of one’s ancestry was apparent and easy to follow。 However, I think the characters were far too two-dimensional and directly characterized。 The author left no room for unique interpretations, sort of blatantly stating things as they were。 The concept in general was interesting and I would recommend it, but I wish the author had developed the character in more depth。 。。。more

I had a hard time deciding how many stars to give; it was between a three and a four, but, because of the action and that it kept me interested, I went with four stars。 I don't understand why so many people are rating it five stars; it's not great literature and seems somewhat predictable and "mundane"。 But I didn't lose interest; it's a well-told story。 I had a hard time deciding how many stars to give; it was between a three and a four, but, because of the action and that it kept me interested, I went with four stars。 I don't understand why so many people are rating it five stars; it's not great literature and seems somewhat predictable and "mundane"。 But I didn't lose interest; it's a well-told story。 。。。more

Wow。 What can I say about this book in one word? Heartbreaking。 That's all you need to know。 It's better to go in blind。 I was so looking forward to getting my hands on this book, whether it be an ARC or on its release date, that I binged it in one day。 It was truly better than I could have hoped for。 I have read two other books from TJR and this was a great continuation for her career。 I cannot express enough how well written the story was and the emotions it kept stirring within me。 I cannot w Wow。 What can I say about this book in one word? Taylor Jenkins Reid owns me。 I don't know how she does it。 I wasn't sure if this book would be for me as I was, unfortunately, let down by daisy jones (we have a very complex relationship)。 But this book just worked。 I felt like I was there。 I could see everything as it happened。 I felt for the characters。 I have never loved/hated characters so much。 Taylor Jenkins Reid owns me。 I don't know how she does it。 I wasn't sure if this book would be for me as I was, unfortunately, let down by daisy jones (we have a very complex relationship)。 But this book just worked。 I felt like I was there。 I could see everything as it happened。 I felt for the characters。 I have never loved/hated characters so much。 。。。more

I absolutely tore through this in a day。 Excellent read for a sunny day outdoors, and I fell in love with each member of the Riva family and their respective stories and the ways their storylines all crossed over。 Would recommend if you like dramatic family stories。

Kate

kind of a bummer… too much going on here for any one plotline to have any real substance。 not even really as atmospheric as I’d hoped—TJR’s general schtick just might not do it for me

Cami

one of the only books i’ve rated a 5 star。 TJR’s style of writing is perfect in my opinion。 all of her books are fantastic, and this one takes first place。 i fell in love with all the characters (except a few like brandon) and i loved the flashbacks where usually in books i dislike flashbacks。 it was great

This was such a unique and captivating novel。 I have never read anything like it。 Wow。 10/10 recommend!!

Expertly written — Malibu Rising digs deep into the relationship between the four siblings and their parents。 Grief, loneliness, “success,” but also the bond and love between this new generation of Rivas。 This is an emotional but beautiful book, I enjoyed the whole thing。

5/5 This is a great summer read and was absolutely up to my expectations。 The plot was written so masterfully but the characters were the most intriguing! *chef's kiss*Malibu Rising follows 2 timelines: 24 hours of the Riva Party at the end of August, 1983, and the history of the Riva family since their parents met in 1956。 It focuses on the Rivas, each sibling unique in their struggles, as well as their parents。 All set in the heart of Malibu and its ocean-crazed inhabitants。 How fame and glamo 5/5 This is a great summer read and was absolutely up to my expectations。 The plot was written so masterfully but the characters were the most intriguing! *chef's kiss*Malibu Rising follows 2 timelines: 24 hours of the Riva Party at the end of August, 1983, and the history of the Riva family since their parents met in 1956。 It focuses on the Rivas, each sibling unique in their struggles, as well as their parents。 All set in the heart of Malibu and its ocean-crazed inhabitants。 How fame and glamour isn't all it seems to be, and most often includes a steep price。 We observe multiple characters and watch their lines intersect until the night descends to chaos and the Riva mansion up in flames。 But a flame that cleanses all the sins and regretsThemes: family, sacrifice, fate, summer I enjoyed the contemplation of whether we are bound to repeat the mistakes of our parents。。。 if we carry their fates, along with their DNA, in our blood。 This was very clear in the book through the parallels between both generations。 To quote Hud Riva: Our parents live inside us, whether they stick around or not。。。 Our heritage lingers in our blood。 I could write whole essays about these characters。 June's tragedy and hopelessness, Nina's sacrifices and love for her family, Mick's being a pos, Kit's insecurities we can all relate to and her endearing humor, even Hud's complexity。 I mean there is definitely a juxtaposition here, a character who's main defining trait is being kind and unable to feel envy others (view spoiler)[ yet cheats with his brother's ex? (hide spoiler)] But he was likeable and interesting nonetheless。 Jay, on the other hand, was quite simply。。。 dull There's nothing there I'm afraid。 I don't get the point of his character except (view spoiler)[getting cheated on (hide spoiler)] lol。 As always this was a very enjoyable read by Taylor Jenkins Reid。 I can't wait till I get to Daisy Jones and the Six!!! YAYYY!! 。。。more

Makes me want to book a flight to california ASAP。 Fun and lively story。 A bit of an underwhelming finish to it。 Makes me wonder if there will be a second。

Great read that follows an aging musical celebrity's children whom he deserted。。 The strength of the main character who assumes leadership role in the family, dropping out of school and taking over the family restaurant。 Great read that follows an aging musical celebrity's children whom he deserted。。 The strength of the main character who assumes leadership role in the family, dropping out of school and taking over the family restaurant。 。。。more

I got approved for an ARC of Carrie Soto is Back this week so I figured I should finally read this book。 To be clear, this is not part of a series but of a universe where characters pop up in other books (Mick Riva was mentioned In Daisy Jones and the Six and one of the husbands in Evelyn Hugo, Cecilia St。 James was in Evelyn Hugo and mentioned in this book, Carrie Soto is mentioned in this book and has her own story coming out soon。) If I were to rate the books so far it would be 1) Daisy Jones I got approved for an ARC of Carrie Soto is Back this week so I figured I should finally read this book。 To be clear, this is not part of a series but of a universe where characters pop up in other books (Mick Riva was mentioned In Daisy Jones and the Six and one of the husbands in Evelyn Hugo, Cecilia St。 James was in Evelyn Hugo and mentioned in this book, Carrie Soto is mentioned in this book and has her own story coming out soon。) If I were to rate the books so far it would be 1) Daisy Jones 2) Evelyn Hugo 3) Malibu Rising。 This was a quick read but I could tell from the beginning that it wasn’t going to be a 5 star book, nowhere near the level of Daisy Jones。 Honestly, it was kind of boring and I just wanted to know how it ended。 Mick Riva is a real asshole and his kids turn out to be decent humans in spite of that fact。 The end。 。。。more

The last 150 pages were very solid。 The beginning of the book was very slow to me and I didn’t care for June & Mick’s storyline。 Reading about the kids was interesting as well and I enjoyed that part。 I was annoyed how we were getting random characters pov’s during the party。 I thought it was very unnecessary。 The ending was underwhelming。
