Summary

Galaxy 'Alex' Stern is the most unlikely member of Yale's freshman class。 A dropout and the sole survivor of a horrific, unsolved crime, Alex was hoping for a fresh start。 But a free ride to one of the world's most prestigious universities was bound to come with a catch。

Alex has been tasked with monitoring the mysterious activities of Yale's secret societies - well-known haunts of the rich and powerful。 Now there's a dead girl on campus and Alex seems to be the only person who won't accept the neat answer the police and campus administration have come up with for her murder。

Because Alex knows the secret societies are far more sinister and extraordinary than anyone ever imagined。 They tamper with forbidden magic。 They raise the dead。 And sometimes they prey on the living …

Took me a long time to get into this one。 Although I loved the ending so worth the read。

this was a good, solid book。 i liked the story, the setting and the overall experience but felt there was something missing。 perhaps i will find it in the sequel? the writing itself was really enjoyable and once the story opens up for you i think it’s a good read。

"I'm pretty sure when my mother was talking about the devil, she had you in mind。"There's something about Leigh Bardugo's writing that always manages to startle and fascinate me。 When I'd first picked up Six of Crows I didn't think I was going to like it one bit because it felt like such a shock。 I have no idea what it is about her writing, but I'm obsessed with it。 It's crude, humoring, incredibly done, and I never want to put her books down。 She's also a world-building genius。 I love feisty fe "I'm pretty sure when my mother was talking about the devil, she had you in mind。"There's something about Leigh Bardugo's writing that always manages to startle and fascinate me。 When I'd first picked up Six of Crows I didn't think I was going to like it one bit because it felt like such a shock。 I have no idea what it is about her writing, but I'm obsessed with it。 It's crude, humoring, incredibly done, and I never want to put her books down。 She's also a world-building genius。 I love feisty female leads。 I love mystery that boggles my brain and leaves me confused trying to keep up。 I love how gruesome this world's form of magic was。 I'd been putting off reading Ninth House, but it's description didn't do it justice。 There's just something about Bardugo's books that only feel wildly captivating once you've actually started it。 。。。more

Extremely bingeworthy audiobook!Loved the story and the magic。 Some characters are a bit flat, and the scene at the president's house at the end was a bit much。 But I will for sure read the next one! Would I die for Darlington? Yes, and I’d apologize for the inconvenience。

I've admired Leigh Bardugo's YA works (particularly the _Smoke and Bone_ trilogy) for several years。 Bardugo's imagination is (almost) unparalleled in YA literature, and her plots feature strong women struggling to free themselves from barriers placed upon their expressions, actions, and lives。Her "adult" premier is not so different from her YA output。 There's a lot to like in this novel that posits a secret underworld of magic and conspiracies among the secret societies at Yale University。 All I've admired Leigh Bardugo's YA works (particularly the _Smoke and Bone_ trilogy) for several years。 Bardugo's imagination is (almost) unparalleled in YA literature, and her plots feature strong women struggling to free themselves from barriers placed upon their expressions, actions, and lives。Her "adult" premier is not so different from her YA output。 There's a lot to like in this novel that posits a secret underworld of magic and conspiracies among the secret societies at Yale University。 All of the "old boy's" clubs come in for some well-deserved roasting, often with excellent humor。 The kinds of magic specialties employed by each society are imaginative, often unique and sometimes awe- (and even generally) inspiring。Many of the characters are also memorable: Darlington, the "golden boy" of the Ninth House (Lethe) tasked with policing the ritual activities of the major eight societies; Turner, the often-skeptical and sarcastic cop who turns out to actually have a heart; and Dawes, the eternal graduate student working on her esoteric dissertation while overseeing the facilities operations for Lethe。But that's where the problems with the novel start: all of these characters, meant in many ways as foils for the protagonist, Galaxy "Alex" Stern, tend to outshine her。 Bardugo attempts to offset this by creating a dangerous (and by turns ugly and horrifying) past for Alex。。。but Bardugo's journeyman years as a YA author ultimately cripple her characterization of Alex。 The scenes that eventually fill out her backstory read more like a YA book than an "adult" thriller。 The narrative tone changes are jarring and don't work as well as they could (I often speculated while reading if Bardugo set out to write this book for a YA audience before deciding to convert it to a more adult readership)。 Another issue is Bardugo's use of the hard-boiled detetive subgenre of the mystery story。 The mastermind behind all of the mayhem was apparent to me from the character's first appearance, even though the motive was hazy until the end of the book。 Alex's very urgent _need_ to get the answers required to succeed in her mission is well-done, but the mystery is not complex enough to satisfy a reader already versed in the genre。The major problem that beset me while reading was the pacing: the novel is far too long to support the material (at least as presented in this book, which appears to possibly be the first in a series) and often, particularly early in the book, the pace is almost tortuously slow。 This is _not_ a matter of world-building, which Bardugo has proven many times that she is a master of; rather, it has to do with trying to build her protagonist's character through layered flashbacks, which Bardugo (or her editors) evidently felt was necessary to establish the secret societies plot before the pressure and action could build。 It led (for me) to a rather long wait for _something_ to happen (luckily, the framing mechanism Bardugo uses to set up the layered flashbacks shows that something _will_ eventually happen。。。you just have to read through a couple hundred pages before things begin to pick up)。Bardugo is such a good artist, always improving on her work in her chosen genres, that I'm sure her next adult book will be more assured, more skillfully plotted and sequenced: this is not a review intended to claim that I (or other readers) should stop reading Bardugo's amazing work。 It's just that, based on what I've read of her work up to date, this is a little less assured and amazing than the novels I'm used to seeing by her。 I'm definitely looking forward to her next book。 。。。more

It’s been years since the last time I’ve abandoned a book but god, this one was slowly killing me。 I never thought a book with ghosts, magic and secret societies could be boring, until I picked up this one。 The main reason why I abandoned this is that the characters are all unlovable。 Especially the protagonist Galaxy Stern ( probably one of the worst names I’ve ever encountered anywhere) she’s such a stereotypical bad girl it hurts to read about her。 There isn’t a single character in this book It’s been years since the last time I’ve abandoned a book but god, this one was slowly killing me。 I never thought a book with ghosts, magic and secret societies could be boring, until I picked up this one。 The main reason why I abandoned this is that the characters are all unlovable。 Especially the protagonist Galaxy Stern ( probably one of the worst names I’ve ever encountered anywhere) she’s such a stereotypical bad girl it hurts to read about her。 There isn’t a single character in this book that you’re going to like。 Not even love, just like。 I had such high hopes for this book, I’ve loved Six of Crows and I was ready to love The Ninth House too。 In theory, I would’ve devoured it。 It really upsets me that such unloveable characters ruined a practically perfect story and plot。 As usual with Leigh Bardugo the building of the magic world and its rules is amazing, but unfortunately you have to enjoy it while standing close to one of the worse pair of characters I’ve ever read about。 。。。more

For the most part of this book, it was a quite mediocre read for me。 I thought about DNFing it more times than I care to remember。 But。。。The last maybe 30% of the book have redeemed the storyline in a very interesting and twisty way。

Interesting and well researched, but leans a little too heavily on thriller "have to keep going while injured and sleep deprived" clichés to keep tension going, and just feels dark for the sake of being dark。 Interesting and well researched, but leans a little too heavily on thriller "have to keep going while injured and sleep deprived" clichés to keep tension going, and just feels dark for the sake of being dark。 。。。more

I can absolutely see why people love this book; it’s setting is fantastic。 Secret, god-like, magical societies in Yale? What a dark, creepy, fantastic setting!Unfortunately this one just isn’t for me。 The time skips confused me and large blocks of text said very little and strayed my attention quickly。 It didn’t quite have the same punch that Bardugo’s phenomenal Grishaverse had, sadly! But I do get the hype, the vibe is really great!

This book was captivating from the start。 It was escapism at its finest。 I loved all the characters and I felt completely immersed in the world of Lethe。 I couldn’t put this book down and was considering staying up all night to finish it。 I loved the way you never knew what was coming next and it kept you guessing right until the end。 Amazing book and anyone who hasn’t read this book is missing out big time !!

I think this book has everything I was expecting to love。 Dark academia。 Vengeful women。 Murder。 Secret societies。 In some ways, this book was delivered。 In others, it didn't。I loved Leigh's writing, and it's fascinating going from the Grishaverse to a contemporary book。 I think it shows versatility and her adaptability to other genres。 I also really liked Alex。 I think she's a perfect example of an anti-hero。 I also realize that I love books in college settings-- Legendborn, Vicious, and Ninth I think this book has everything I was expecting to love。 Dark academia。 Vengeful women。 Murder。 Secret societies。 In some ways, this book was delivered。 In others, it didn't。I loved Leigh's writing, and it's fascinating going from the Grishaverse to a contemporary book。 I think it shows versatility and her adaptability to other genres。 I also really liked Alex。 I think she's a perfect example of an anti-hero。 I also realize that I love books in college settings-- Legendborn, Vicious, and Ninth House。 I also really liked the ending and thought it's setting up the next book greatly。 What didn't work for me was this book is very dense at times。 You're kind of thrown into this book expected to know everything, and it all gets dumped on you。 Also, I wouldn't say I liked the climax of the story all that much。 There were also some scenes where I loved the message that Leigh was pushing, but sometimes I wish she would have driven home that message。 Overall, it wasn't bad。 The second book should be better since we have all the groundwork done, and I will definitely read it。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I can't believe this was written by Leigh Bardugo。 I simply cannot。Let me tell you why I don't think highly of this particular novel:1。 The characters were so flat。 Even Darlington who had LOTS of potential wasn't given enough time and space to develop。 Except for him, I didn't like ANYBODY here。2。 The narration was rather messy。 Leigh is known for her talent when it comes to conducting stories。 Those timelines, however, didn't feel connected at all。 3。 THE TRAUMA。 When you create a character th I can't believe this was written by Leigh Bardugo。 I simply cannot。Let me tell you why I don't think highly of this particular novel:1。 The characters were so flat。 Even Darlington who had LOTS of potential wasn't given enough time and space to develop。 Except for him, I didn't like ANYBODY here。2。 The narration was rather messy。 Leigh is known for her talent when it comes to conducting stories。 Those timelines, however, didn't feel connected at all。 3。 THE TRAUMA。 When you create a character that has gone through a lot of hardships, you cannot just take any shortcuts。 I couldn't feel sorry for Alex, no matter how much I tried。 The violence she experienced was awful, but it didn't even bother me when I was reading about it。 That's not how you write books heavily grounded on trauma。 4。 TOO MUCH NARRATION, TOO LITTLE PLOT。 And too little atmosphere。5。 Ok Leigh we get it that the characters have to face a plethora of obstacles, but you don't need to mention vomiting in every single chapter。 That's not what makes a novel 'adult'。But maybe some positives: the ending was great, that's how you end novels (it had such CAOS season 2 vibes)! The world building was really interesting to me and I'd love to read more about it。 Do I recommend this book? No。 It was a let-down。 Will I read some next installments? Probably not。 Unless they are good。 。。。more

What an exciting new world that Leigh Bardugo has created again! It did take me some time to get into the book and the pace was a little slow at the start, it‘s definitely a different style than SoC or Shadow and Bone, but she is still my queen for dark character building! And the plot twist just kept coming。 I am very very excited for the sequel 🥰

I really enjoyed this and loved the mystery and magic, but it's a dense book and the beginning took a while to get into。 Especially since there was so much infodumping, lots of information just on Yale's campus and building even when it wasn't actually relevant。 I look forward to the sequel though and where Bardugo plans to take this story! I felt this book was extremely well done, and as a fan of Bardugo I was a little nervous as I’d only read her YA fantasy novels。 This book was slow and difficult to get the hang of at first as I have no knowledge of Yale or how the US college system really works。 This was confusing but I feel Bardugo did a good job at explaining things while not dumbing it down or under explaining。 This book feels like a 4。5 and I really loved it after it amped up a bit and I understood things better。 All the pl I felt this book was extremely well done, and as a fan of Bardugo I was a little nervous as I’d only read her YA fantasy novels。 This book was slow and difficult to get the hang of at first as I have no knowledge of Yale or how the US college system really works。 This was confusing but I feel Bardugo did a good job at explaining things while not dumbing it down or under explaining。 This book feels like a 4。5 and I really loved it after it amped up a bit and I understood things better。 All the plot lines and character elements felt necessary to the story and it flowed so well。 The ‘villain’ reveal was also well balanced as she placed seeds so I suspected both people but hadn’t figured out why or how exactly。 I hope that other readers also noticed how Alex had been groomed from a very young age by her ex boyfriend, it was not explicit but felt clear from the age gap and power imbalance。 I feel Leigh didn’t address it since Alex was the victim of the grooming and likely had not fully realised it had happened。 。。。more

4。5/5 🌟I had a really difficult start to this book and it took me a good while to get into it, but once I did I couldn’t put it down or stop thinking about this world。 Dubbed the ‘adult Harry Potter’ and it didn’t disappoint。 Loved the darkness and magical essence throughout, and some humour!
