Summary

If it hadn't been for my firm resolution to always read the book before seeing the movie, I never would have finished that book。 I've rarely been so bored and the only two characters I liked, died early on。 If it hadn't been for my firm resolution to always read the book before seeing the movie, I never would have finished that book。 I've rarely been so bored and the only two characters I liked, died early on。 。。。more

If that's a thing you like and you want to dive into science-fiction classics, don't skip this one。 。。。more

Was skeptical going in, but then got caught up with the characters and the magical world of Arrakis。 I really wanted Paul to make it, and as someone else told me, "the world-building is really good" and it was。 I don't know why I was reading it, but I could not stop thinking about the book at all times。 Was rooting for the underdog, but at some point Paul becomes too perfect/tragic hero-y。 Reading the book somewhere around the 3rd part left me with a gross feeling。 (Its like Lawrence of Arabia/S Was skeptical going in, but then got caught up with the characters and the magical world of Arrakis。 I really wanted Paul to make it, and as someone else told me, "the world-building is really good" and it was。 I don't know why I was reading it, but I could not stop thinking about the book at all times。 Was rooting for the underdog, but at some point Paul becomes too perfect/tragic hero-y。 Reading the book somewhere around the 3rd part left me with a gross feeling。 (Its like Lawrence of Arabia/Star Wars/ Avatar all have the same storylines。) I wonder what Dune would look like if it were written today。 。。。more

I'm not gonna be one to deny the Historical-Significance of Dune。 It really is a one of a kind literary work that gained credibility in the literary world at a time when sci-fi and fantasy were not taken very seriously。 And of course, it inspired and paved the way for sci-fi authors to come up with their own sci-fi epics。 But does that mean it's still worth reading in 2021?The thing about Dune is that if I were to write a quick synopsis of the story here, you would think this book is nuts and ge I'm not gonna be one to deny the Historical-Significance of Dune。 It really is a one of a kind literary work that gained credibility in the literary world at a time when sci-fi and fantasy were not taken very seriously。 And of course, it inspired and paved the way for sci-fi authors to come up with their own sci-fi epics。 But does that mean it's still worth reading in 2021?The thing about Dune is that if I were to write a quick synopsis of the story here, you would think this book is nuts and get it right away。 This is an epic in every sense of the word, a story spanning years, planets and continents on planets。 And I was quite enthralled with it for about the first half of the book (which is actually the less interesting half, in hindsight!)。 But as the book goes on, slowly unveiling its plot, you come to realize that it's actually kinda hollow and the rise and fall of Atreides isn't really even what the book is aboutA lot of things about Dune can be compared to Lord of the Rings。 They're both fantasy epics taking place in richly detailed universes。 And yet have you ever noticed that while even the most casual of readers can bust out a handful of Gandalf quotes, the only quote from Dune that has implanted itself even within a subset of pop culture is the Bene Gesserit litany against fear? In some ways, that tells you everything you need to know about DuneThe difference between LOTR and Dune is where the priorities of each book lie。 Tolkien created a wonderful and comprehensive world for LOTR, with so many mountains of details that tales from Middle Earth are still being published to this day。 But LOTR itself isn't about Middle Earth or its cultures and practices: those are just the setting and background for a story that's easy to get invested in, and features memorable charactersDune is a lot more like The Silmarillion。 I'd say its title is fitting; Dune, or Arrakis, is the main character of Frank Herbert's novel, and the one you're really supposed to care about。 Paul Atreides's quest for revenge, and the uprising of the Fremen, read like things that just happened on this planet。 They're a framework by which you get to explore the ecology, the culture and the people of Arrakis, as well as the many ways in which this desolate planet is valuable to the Imperium and the ways in which the Imperium is exploiting the planet。 The fact that Dune is such a highly regarded work shows that this works for a lot of people, but it didn't for me and it might not for youIt's a shame, because if I were to write a quick synopsis of Dune's plot, you'd think this story is insane and would be curious to go on its rollercoaster ride。 But the truth is that Dune is less a rollercoaster and more like a trip to the museum。 That's neither a good thing nor a bad thing in and of itself, but it's something you should know when you're weighing your options of buying Dune or the numerous more contemporary sci-fi epics that are also sitting on bookstore shelves now 。。。more

It is a truth universally acknowledged that one cannot feel properly snobby at a book-based movie if one does not remember the book well, having only read it years before。 Yes, my reason for a reread of this masterpiece was the need to appear knowledgeable/annoying in front of my friends in the cinema。 Sue me。Dune by itself is, again, a mastrepiece and there are countless people out there doing it more justice than I ever could by reviewing it。 It contains some of the best, if not the best, poli It is a truth universally acknowledged that one cannot feel properly snobby at a book-based movie if one does not remember the book well, having only read it years before。 Yes, my reason for a reread of this masterpiece was the need to appear knowledgeable/annoying in front of my friends in the cinema。 Sue me。Dune by itself is, again, a mastrepiece and there are countless people out there doing it more justice than I ever could by reviewing it。 It contains some of the best, if not the best, politics out there, is extremely quotable if you are the type to collect written quotes (otherwise stick to action-story one-liners) and leaves you with the nice feeling of, after having spend hundreds of pages of world building, having barely scratched the surface of it all。 The only issue might be the characters that are a bit wooden at places, but that mostly comes from this being half-religious text (go listen to that one excellent episode of the Imaginary Worlds podcast!)。Now, I rarely do rereads and was hence interested how this would feel。 First of all, I got older, having read Dune for the first time at high school, which, perhaps expectedly, made the book seem much shorter。 Yes, a lot happens but at the same time, you get a scene here, a scene there and suddenly you are at the end。 This might also have to do with the richness of the world and narrative。 I was going into the story remembering bits and pieces。 Worms, box with pain, the litany against fear, the Fremen, walking funny and all that。 Turns out, the reread did not remind me of the pieces I have forgotten as much as it helped me connect what I already knew - as it turns out I remembered basically everything one way or another。 Maybe that was also why it all seemed so short, having started with an expectation of being reminded of all the aspects of this universe while having all pieces there。All in all, Dune is an epic, a legend and a classic。 It burns itself into your brain so that even years after reading it you'd pretty much remember all of it and use it to judge other sci-fi worlds。 Go check it out in the cinema but don't skip the book - it's richer, better and more satisfying。 。。。more

Probably the first true sci-fi/world building book I made it all the way through。 Had to Google around a bit in the beginning to get my mind around things but once it clicked, I ate up the rest of the book。 The writing style and level of detail is just amazing。Definitely going to read the rest of the series after this。

First, a disclaimer。 I'm not an avid science fiction reader。 I've read some dystopian YA, 1984, Hitchhiker's Guide, Flowers for Algernon, Artemis Fowl。。。 you know, the light stuff ;)。 So this is the first high science fiction that I've delved into。I'm surprised at how 'un-sciency' it was。 It was more of a political, philosophical and spiritual novel that happens to be set in the future。 I found so many similarities with the limited knowledge of philosophy and religion that I have。 So in general First, a disclaimer。 I'm not an avid science fiction reader。 I've read some dystopian YA, 1984, Hitchhiker's Guide, Flowers for Algernon, Artemis Fowl。。。 you know, the light stuff ;)。 So this is the first high science fiction that I've delved into。I'm surprised at how 'un-sciency' it was。 It was more of a political, philosophical and spiritual novel that happens to be set in the future。 I found so many similarities with the limited knowledge of philosophy and religion that I have。 So in general I was not that impressed with the storyline。 However, I was impressed by the man who wrote this story。 I'm impressed with how deep his understanding was in all the different subjects that made up this saga。 Watching a couple of his interviews I'm close to be convinced that he's not merely imaginative but visionary。I also love the message that he's trying to convey in this series-don't follow leaders blindly, human power is never absolute and history repeats itself。 I even dare to call this a parable of the human condition。 。。。more

While a long and dense read, it is easy to see why this is a sci-fi classic。 Lots of action, politics, magic and mystical happenings all taking place on far flung planets with memorable characters。 If you like long books and sci-fi, you should pick this up!

I've had Dune on my 'to read' list for years。 Maybe because of the long wait, maybe because I purchased the audible version instead of the physical book - I was a bit disappointed。 I didn't manage to enagage in the story, but I did manage to care for some of the characters and their actions。 Great description paragraphs, good dialogue, and I can see how the story inspired many modern science fiction writers and how it is a classic of the genre。 I've had Dune on my 'to read' list for years。 Maybe because of the long wait, maybe because I purchased the audible version instead of the physical book - I was a bit disappointed。 I didn't manage to enagage in the story, but I did manage to care for some of the characters and their actions。 Great description paragraphs, good dialogue, and I can see how the story inspired many modern science fiction writers and how it is a classic of the genre。 。。。more

I had a MMP copy of Dune for a long time, read about 20 pages, then promptly gave up because I could not at all parse out what was happening。 Did that ill-fated copy have a glossary in the back? Probably, but I was also probably too thick to check back there。 Blessedly this version was a trade paperback with nice, spacious print, and blessedly I went on vacation and had ample time to do nothing else but be on Arrakis with Paul the Wonder Boy。 I liked this much, much more than I thought I would。 I had a MMP copy of Dune for a long time, read about 20 pages, then promptly gave up because I could not at all parse out what was happening。 Did that ill-fated copy have a glossary in the back?
