Great for a better understanding of laws and Islamic interpretation of Abrahamic stories。Much misconception involving the laws, both by western media and racist movements, but also by Islamic fundamentalist。 However, many stories here I already knew, mainly the stuff about moses etc。 I was hoping for more original tales。 May need to search out Sorah's individually。 Great for a better understanding of laws and Islamic interpretation of Abrahamic stories。Much misconception involving the laws, both by western media and racist movements, but also by Islamic fundamentalist。 However, many stories here I already knew, mainly the stuff about moses etc。 I was hoping for more original tales。 May need to search out Sorah's individually。 。。。more

I have to say after learning what has been written in the Holy Qur'an, it has allowed me to see people and myself in this world differently and it has taken me to a whole level I really can't explain in words。 I am grateful beyond measure, the way I think is different, the way I enter act with others is even more positive。 I feel a sense of peace like never before。 I better understand myself and what our creator expects of me。 The Holy Qur'an is helping me to become the person, the woman I need I have to say after learning what has been written in the Holy Qur'an, it has allowed me to see people and myself in this world differently and it has taken me to a whole level I really can't explain in words。 I am grateful beyond measure, the way I think is different, the way I enter act with others is even more positive。 I feel a sense of peace like never before。 I better understand myself and what our creator expects of me。 The Holy Qur'an is helping me to become the person, the woman I need to be to in order to live in such a hostile environment that is happening in our world and preparing me for life after my death。 The Holy Bible that most of us are aware of in my opinion has left a void in my spiritual learning which left questions marks in my thinking。 The Holy Qur'an has not。 All the biblical questions I asked as a child and was dismissed by my grandmother was answered in the Holy Qur'an。 I'm still learning a lot, as I should and I'm looking forward to seeing how my being the person in the mirror helps to bring a good change in others。 After all, I have to be the positive change I want to see in this world and the Qur'an is helping me to do that and learn the truth little by little。 Assalamualaikum。 。。。more

I got goosebumps when I first started reading。 I could immediately relate to and understand this Oxford translation and I appreciate the introduction immensely because without its context and dispelling of myths around it, I wouldn’t have taken it as seriously。I studied the Bible a bit and have always enjoyed World Religions classes, so I was surprised when I learned that the Qur’an just confirms everything in the Old and New Testaments and that it’s just a continuation of the same message。 Just I got goosebumps when I first started reading。 I could immediately relate to and understand this Oxford translation and I appreciate the introduction immensely because without its context and dispelling of myths around it, I wouldn’t have taken it as seriously。I studied the Bible a bit and have always enjoyed World Religions classes, so I was surprised when I learned that the Qur’an just confirms everything in the Old and New Testaments and that it’s just a continuation of the same message。 Just like the Christians keeping in the Jewish holy books。 The Muslim people have been grossly misunderstood for so long and I regret any misgivings I had in the past due to events like 9/11。 There are radicals and extremists everywhere, but they never represent the majority and I’m very thankful to have read the Qur’an and now have a better understanding of their faith。I took countless pictures of certain passages so I can remember them later, as well as even considering adopting the faith myself。 It’s hard to describe how powerful it hit me and since I knew many of the biblical stories, their consistent references reinforced the overall message。I look forward to looking deeper into Islam and applying what I can of it’s teachings。 。。。more

A work that triumphs almost singularly in rhetoric – seek not for well-spun tales as found in the Hebrew Bible (many of which repeated, and repeated, and repeated again here – but little in the way of the new); nor seek the mysterious dealings of a latter-day prophet, nor the deeds of his many successors。 The Qu’ran does not enter upon such territory – it instead weaves the legalese of Leviticus with a peculiar style of religious writing that seems designed entirely to persuade。 Which becomes wo A work that triumphs almost singularly in rhetoric – seek not for well-spun tales as found in the Hebrew Bible (many of which repeated, and repeated, and repeated again here – but little in the way of the new); nor seek the mysterious dealings of a latter-day prophet, nor the deeds of his many successors。 The Qu’ran does not enter upon such territory – it instead weaves the legalese of Leviticus with a peculiar style of religious writing that seems designed entirely to persuade。 Which becomes worthy of mention against the Bible, whose argumentation is fractured and, often enough, not any kind of argumentation at all。 The Qu’ran is instead composed (perhaps excepting the ending suras) with a knife-sharp balance of elements。 It provides a vision of paradise amok with earthly delights (something Christian and Jewish scripture notably avoids); and then so many visions of hellfire; and then, between these things, a multitude of laws and moral instructions。 The many tales, largely repeats of Hebrew prophets with some Christian additions, are themselves presented not in the historical mode but rather in support of the leading argument; Noah and Moses (and Moses and Moses and Moses and Moses) are brought forth to provide Muhammed his religious genealogy, and then as evidence that cycles are in constant repetition and to doubt this truth is much the same as the many who doubted those truths (which, it is to be supposed, are considered self-evident)。 The rigour of argumentation is itself impressive: closest to Biblical analogy would be the letters of the New Testament, that seek to buffet whatever misconceptions were quickly arising, only the Qu’ran is rather more consistent (and in admission when the revelation ‘advances’), repeating frequently that which is against that which is not。 All of which contributing to a reading experience that frequently butts onto tedium。 An already short book is made so much shorter by its relative dearth of material – I was overwhelmingly aware of the function of the text, the way in which it arranged its stories and its implorings and its warnings。 It is too keen a blade for one such as myself, ambling through in search of idle poetry。 A great deal of time is spent asserting that the Qu’ran is, in fact, not poetry。 This is largely (if not completely) true。 P。S。 Though my own translation can encumber some of the blame: frequently a footnote will render an otherwise unexceptional phrase in some wonderfully bizarre metaphor, and I cannot help but think this edition would have benefitted in retaining the literalism in the main text and providing its explanation in the foot-。 。。。more

Returning back to the Qur'an, I am surprised at the minimal mention of Prophet Muhammad。 In the Bible, Jesus functions as the guiding element throughout the book while in the Qur'an, Muhammad is barely there。 It seems that the story of Moses and the Israelites is more fundamental to this holy book with mentions and references to it throughout。 Returning back to the Qur'an, I am surprised at the minimal mention of Prophet Muhammad。 In the Bible, Jesus functions as the guiding element throughout the book while in the Qur'an, Muhammad is barely there。 It seems that the story of Moses and the Israelites is more fundamental to this holy book with mentions and references to it throughout。 。。。more

the distribution of alms-tax and how to handle the tricky business of divorce and re-marriages, e。g。 But the book lacks a cohesive narrative structure。 The parts about creating man and earh don't come until late in these scriptures。Islam is a Johnny-come-lately to the stage of monotheism。 It is predated by Judaism and Christianity。 The foreword admits that Mohammed firmly believed Allah (rathan Yahweh or Jehovan) had revealted the truth to Jews and Christians。 But Jews had corrupted God's words by splitting into schisms and Christians had given God a son whom people were expected to worship when God had expressly forbade worship of anyone except himself。 So, while the book touts Allah ad nauseam, it reiterates quite a few famous stories from the Bible, with minor revisions。 Thus there are endless wearisome re-telling sof Joseph, Noah's ark, Moses's rescue of his people, Abraham's exploits and explaining how Allah "willed" Mary into giving birth to Jesus but didn't impregnate her。The Koran is largely lacking in humor, perhaps because it was written down b y a single man, Mohammed himself。 He acquired a reputation for honesty and wisdom and these qualities don't necessarily go hand-in-hand with a sense of fun。There are passages in which Mohammed grants himself special favors, such as when "Allah" affords him the right to marry cousins--a privilege granted to no other of Allah's followers--and a sura devoted entirely from absolving him of an oath made to one of his wives and threatening divorce if the two women who spoke out against him don't repent and behave themselves。 There is one somewhat amusing sura in which he basically cries out for an uncle to die in a fire and his wife hung by her neck。 You can tell it's a personal attack because the male victim (one of his uncles and a fierce opponent of Mohammed) is mentioned by name and it lacks the usual threat of Hell-fire after death, which is Allah's usual doom for unbelievers。 Hell-fire suffers from the same dearth of imagination that afflicts much of this book。 Time and again, it's merely a place where unbelievers burn endlessly after death。 (Where's Aligheri Dante when you need him?)。 Paradise is almost as dreary, although certain details do change as the book progresses。 The main picture that emerges is that dead unbelievers will be given garments of silk, lie on soft couches, drink rich, clear fluid out of goblets of precious metals, eat delectable fruits under shade-bearing trees。 In this version (which the author admits is ordered differently from the usual arrangement of the longest passages to the shortest), Paradise has the favored being served by boys graced with eternal youth who look like "sprinkled pearls"。 In latter suras, we have these delectable youths serving alongside shy virgins。 Finally, only the dark-eyed houris are there with the lucky believers who will be wedded to these virgins who've never know man or jinn。 No mention of the boys at this point and you wonder whom female believers are meant to marry after death。Speaking of women, some allowances are made to see that they're treated with care。 They shouldn't be forced to have more children than is good for them; their dowries should be given back to them under certain circumstances and it is forbidden to bury alive unwanted baby girls。 But the Koran states that women are less than men; Allah has decreed men rule over women and that men can beat them to force obedience。That's right--among other lovely passages the Koran condones and aadvocates wife-beating, slavery, polygamy and the killing of unbelievers wherever you find them。 At the end of the day, the main messages you get from the Koran are1。 Ther eis no other god than Allah。2。 Submit to Allah。3。 Fear Allah4。 Without belief i Allah, after death YOU WILL BURN。 As in Christianity, it doesn't matter how decent, caring, thoughtful, loving, kind or generous you are。 If faith isn't added to the mix, after death, you roast like a suckling pig。This is a tedious, droning snore of a book, one that bestowed privileges on its chosen prophet as if he were a touring rock star, allowed for the subjugation of women and the sanctioned murder of infidels。 Skip it and read fanfiction with Mary Sues。 They've got to be better than this。 。。。more

The Quran is not a book like any other; it is a timeless guide for life, death and the hereafter。 It is the holy book of Muslims and sacred scripture of Islam。 Qurʾān was revealed by the angel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad stariting from 610(when he was 40) and ending with Muhammad’s death in 632 CE。 The Qurʾān generally styles itself as divine speech by employing the first person singular or plural (“I” or “we”) in statements that clearly refer to the Deity(Allah)Why should non-muslims believ The Quran is not a book like any other; it is a timeless guide for life, death and the hereafter。 It is the holy book of Muslims and sacred scripture of Islam。 Qurʾān was revealed by the angel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad stariting from 610(when he was 40) and ending with Muhammad’s death in 632 CE。 The Qurʾān generally styles itself as divine speech by employing the first person singular or plural (“I” or “we”) in statements that clearly refer to the Deity(Allah)Why should non-muslims believe Quran to be the true word of the only God?There are many provers but lets take an exampleCreation of Life:"We made every living thing from water。 Will they not believe?" (Quran 21:30)In this verse, Allah mentions water as the basic element of the creation of every living thing。 Today, science proves that every living thing is made up of cells and these cells consist of 80% cytoplasm, which in simple terms is "water"。 This might have seemed odd for the people of that time as there was no science to prove it but today, science proves this fact which Quran mentioned 1400 years ago。Why do Muslims not believe in The holy scriptures before the Quran?Muslims believe that Allah gave Muhammad these teachings because all earlier religious texts were no longer reliable。 The Qur'an is relevant for all people at all times in their life。 It is believed to have only come from Allah, which makes it the most important book for Muslims。If the people even now don't believe in the Quran, then leave everything and try researching yourself and keep in mind that the religion Islam is often protraited very wrong。 But Quran and Allah are true! 。。。more
