Summary

For millennia, Buddhists have enjoyed the limitless benefits of meditation。 But how does it work? And why? The principles behind this ancient practice have long eluded some of the best minds in modern science。 Until now。

This groundbreaking work, with a foreword by bestselling author Daniel Goleman, invites us to join in unlocking the secrets behind the practice of meditation。 Working with neuroscientists, the author provides clear insights into modern research, which indicates that systematic training in meditation can enhance activity in areas of the brain associated with happiness and compassion。

With an infectious joy and insatiable curiosity, Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche weaves together the principles of Tibetan Buddhism, neuroscience, and quantum physics in a way that will forever change the way we understand the human experience。 And using the basic meditation practices, he offers readers a chance to recognize the unlimited potential of our own minds。

I've heard a lot about meditation, and tried different apps and tutorials for it, but this book completely changed the way I see it and offered plenty of ways to meditate -- not just sitting for a long time following your breath and clearing your mind。 It also helped me understand Buddhism better。 I would definitely recommend it :) I've heard a lot about meditation, and tried different apps and tutorials for it, but this book completely changed the way I see it and offered plenty of ways to meditate -- not just sitting for a long time following your breath and clearing your mind。 It also helped me understand Buddhism better。 I would definitely recommend it :) 。。。more

There are some very interesting sections on scientific research and awareness, and other, it felt to me, well-worn paths on meditation that lagged a little。 I have very much enjoyed the sense of connection, though, this book brought me to my practice。

Good place to learn the proper techniques of meditation, but nothing you cant pick up in 2 hours watching his videos on youtube。Losing a few stars because of some nonsensical lines like purporting that high level meditation can give you telepathy。。。 Sorry, as much as I believe in the health benefits of this, its not going to make you Professor X。

Well written, well researched。 A meaningful guide to meditation and the science behind it

very informative and helpful if you are interested in buddhism and meditation。 Its a bit like finding the right shoes。 What may fit and be comfy for someone else may not fit and work for you。 I enjoyed the book and learned from it。 The science side I found a bit hard work although it did add to the overall read。 Will probably re read certain parts again in the future。

Great book on the marriage between eastern mysticism and western research/technology。 One of my favorite lines:“Let yourself enjoy the view as you travel along the path。 The view is your own mind, and because your mind is already enlightened, if you take the opportunity to rest awhile along the journey, eventually you’ll realize that the place you want to reach is the place you already are。”

Even though Rinpoche is from a different school and tradition, Dhamma is Dhamma and universal as ever。 I'm certainly not in its target audience but I did find this to be a delightful read。 Even though Rinpoche is from a different school and tradition, Dhamma is Dhamma and universal as ever。 I'm certainly not in its target audience but I did find this to be a delightful read。 。。。more

I have been following Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche in Youtube for some time now。 I like the way he explains the Buddhist mindfulness meditation techniques in simple language。I am a big fan of his sense of humor。 If you are like me , you will enjoy this book a lot。 This book tries to give scientific explanation to the Buddhist meditation and its benefits which is new。 On top of that he summarizes his teachings and methods which is very helpful if you want to get into mindfulness practice。

I always thought meditation is such a chore。 It is too difficult and sophisticated for me, and most importantly, "I don't have the time for it"。 This book gave a very good explanation on why we need to do meditation, the different types of meditation, how to do it, how to overcome the obstacles, and the perks of doing meditation。 It also shows how we can seamlessly incorporate mediation to our everyday life。The book also compared scientific and Buddhist perspectives on meditation and our body an I always thought meditation is such a chore。 It is too difficult and sophisticated for me, and most importantly, "I don't have the time for it"。 This book gave a very good explanation on why we need to do meditation, the different types of meditation, how to do it, how to overcome the obstacles, and the perks of doing meditation。 It also shows how we can seamlessly incorporate mediation to our everyday life。The book also compared scientific and Buddhist perspectives on meditation and our body and mind。 There appeared to be many similarities between the two。 I am impressed at how much the Rinpoche learned about science。。。and how he can explained things simply despite the jargons。。。 One of the most commonly used words in this book is perhaps "neuronal"!I also love his take on Buddhism, and his occasional jokes in the book。 I can already imagine what kind of person he is。 I think this kind of attitude and teaching style are precisely what we need to invite more people to explore the often intimidating (due to its renowned complexity) Buddhist texts and teachings! He greatly improved my understanding on some of the Buddhist terns that I had difficult time understanding, such as "emptiness"。。。 The way I understand it is that life as we experience it, is like a dream。 To exercise our full potential, to transcend suffering, we need to be aware the inherently empty nature of our surroundings。 Meditation helps to "wake us up"。 Awareness or mindfulness also comes together with compassion, which is a prerequisite to thrive in this interdependent world。It's a really good read! Easy to recommend。 However, as always, I agree with the Buddha to approach everything with a critical mind!"As you would burn, cut, and rub gold, likewise, the wise monk examines my teachings。 Examine my teachings well, but don't take them on faith"P。s。 I found many overlaps between Buddhism and Taoism (by Lao Zi) in this book。 Also with western philosophers/ writers like Hemingway and Victor Frankl。 。。。more

A methodical look at Buddhism in relation to modern science。 I appreciated the practical tips for meditation and the compassion of the author。 The only thing that would make it better is a section on trauma informed techniques for mental illness。

it was an amazing book that made me really think about happiness, mediation and the science behind it。 i will definitely be re-reading it sometime in the future because its just such good food for thought。also this book gave me kind of hope for the future as if nothing is lost just yet, and that literally anyone can find their own happiness, tranquillity and calmness in any point of their life。

Great book! Nice of Mingyur to actually learn the science and accept it as complimentary and supplementary in his buddhist framework。Only not 5 stars because there’s random miracle claims in it that are off-putting to the scientific worldview

I thought the first half was very good, as an introduction to the basic concepts of meditation and the mind science that's starting to show what it does and why it helps。 I've never been that interested in the need for science to prove meditation is 'good for you'; I know what it does for me and that's enough。 But what's interesting about this book is that rather than a western scientist/academic/intellectual explaining how this exotic eastern tradition that's been around for thousands of years I thought the first half was very good, as an introduction to the basic concepts of meditation and the mind science that's starting to show what it does and why it helps。 I've never been that interested in the need for science to prove meditation is 'good for you'; I know what it does for me and that's enough。 But what's interesting about this book is that rather than a western scientist/academic/intellectual explaining how this exotic eastern tradition that's been around for thousands of years is a benefit that science! Confirms! is GOOD!; instead of that, it's a tibetan monk with a lifetime of training, and some particular experiences in that life, who gets interested in the science and decides to learn about it。 I like this perspective on it。 Also, Rinpoche is actually pretty funny! I enjoyed the occasional spark of wry humor。 The second half of the book offers instructions on different meditation practices, and it was interesting to me because some of them were new to me; and, to be honest, I'm not sure how well this part of the book would land with someone actually trying to develop a meditation practice。 Some of the practices would, I think, be challenging for a real beginner。 On the other hand, I really like that he emphasised that consistency is more important than sitting for hours; that even a short practice, done regularly, has real benefits。 I'd recommend this book to someone who was interested in an introduction to meditation and wants the science piece。 。。。more

A nice intro to meditation。 I think it's enough for the novice to try meditation and at least determine if they like it and want to do more research or practice。 I wish there was more detail on the scientific tests used to measure the brain, but otherwise, I enjoyed it。 A nice intro to meditation。 I think it's enough for the novice to try meditation and at least determine if they like it and want to do more research or practice。 I wish there was more detail on the scientific tests used to measure the brain, but otherwise, I enjoyed it。 。。。more

Other books on Buddhism that I have read before have struck me as boring。 But not this, the author is very clear in his way of explaining Buddhist practices for daily life。 Highly recommended!

Fun easy read explaining foundational principles of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy。 Personally, it felt like a diet version of Alan Watts。 Yongey Mingyur doesn't quite explain science as entertaining as Alan Watts, way too many "I have been told by really smart people that this is how science is。。。"。 The last third of the book explains some easy meditations, but I never quite see value in reading about meditation prompts (better spent listening to guided practices)。 I've heard is next book is reall Fun easy read explaining foundational principles of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy。 Personally, it felt like a diet version of Alan Watts。 Yongey Mingyur doesn't quite explain science as entertaining as Alan Watts, way too many "I have been told by really smart people that this is how science is。。。"。 The last third of the book explains some easy meditations, but I never quite see value in reading about meditation prompts (better spent listening to guided practices)。 I've heard is next book is really strong as it was written after he went on a solo journey giving up all material possessions and wandering around。 This book was before that and you can tell his regurgitation is quite strong。 Although a strong practitioner at this point, it made me realize how much our life is shaped by early context。 I recommend passing over this and choosing a different book for the topic。。 。 。。。more
