Summary

'Kill us? They've never needed to kill us,' said Lamb。 'I mean, look at us。 What would be the point?'

A year after a calamitous blunder by the Russian secret service left a British citizen dead from novichok poisoning, Diana Taverner is on the warpath。 What seems a gutless response from the government has pushed the Service's First Desk into mounting her own counter-offensive - but she's had to make a deal with the devil first。 And given that the devil in question is arch-manipulator Peter Judd, she could be about to lose control of everything she's fought for。

Meanwhile, still reeling from recent losses, the slow horses are worried they've been pushed further into the cold。 Slough House has been wiped from Service records, and fatal accidents keep happening。 No wonder Jackson Lamb's crew are feeling paranoid。 But have they actually been targeted?

With a new populist movement taking a grip on London's streets, and the old order ensuring that everything's for sale to the highest bidder, the world's an uncomfortable place for those deemed surplus to requirements。 The wise move would be to find a safe place and wait for the troubles to pass。

But the slow horses aren't famed for making wise decisions。

Always tight and fast。 And always laugh out loud moments。 More, please。

Chris

An incredible series somehow keeps getting better!

4。5 stars maybe。 Excellent as per usual。 However a lot of Peter Judd’s subplot just felt like set up for the next book。

Dave

Rather slow but worth it and it sets the scene nicely for the next book。

Another Slough House entry, again I rather enjoyed it without it being mind blowing。 Well done and well enjoyed。

Having read a number of books in this series , I thought I knew what to expect 。。 Although similar with humour and the leader of the failed agents (Jackson Lamb) as obnoxious as ever this book seems more politically relevant than previous ones 。 The fallout from the Russian Novichok poisonings in Salisbury starts a tit for tat retaliation battle , which inevitably drags the agents from Slough House into the picture after someone has released their files to the Russians 。 Plenty of humour still t Having read a number of books in this series , I thought I knew what to expect 。。 Although similar with humour and the leader of the failed agents (Jackson Lamb) as obnoxious as ever this book seems more politically relevant than previous ones 。 The fallout from the Russian Novichok poisonings in Salisbury starts a tit for tat retaliation battle , which inevitably drags the agents from Slough House into the picture after someone has released their files to the Russians 。 Plenty of humour still there though , with great characters throughout。。 。。。more

A Unique ExperienceThe Slough House series is an exhibition field for Herron’s talented writing skills and inspired storytelling。 The resident slow horses are relatable to virtually everyone who’s ever suffered unearned consequences while trying to get through life’s maze。 Strains of compassion blend with cruel assaults that pull a shameful secret laugh from the reader。 The backdrop of espionage and state secrets fuel the story and poke sharp sticks at real world affairs。 The entire series is a A Unique ExperienceThe Slough House series is an exhibition field for Herron’s talented writing skills and inspired storytelling。 The resident slow horses are relatable to virtually everyone who’s ever suffered unearned consequences while trying to get through life’s maze。 Strains of compassion blend with cruel assaults that pull a shameful secret laugh from the reader。 The backdrop of espionage and state secrets fuel the story and poke sharp sticks at real world affairs。 The entire series is a delight and Slough House delivers another gem。 Read the series to enjoy the full impact of this genius work。 。。。more

a really good addition to a terrific series。 i don't see how anyone could make heads or tails of this novel without reading at least some of the previous volumes。 i plan to go back and read the series again this time in order and back to back。 Jackson Lamb is one of the genre's best characters。 think George Smiley's obnoxious evil twin。 what a hoot。 a really good addition to a terrific series。 i don't see how anyone could make heads or tails of this novel without reading at least some of the previous volumes。 i plan to go back and read the series again this time in order and back to back。 Jackson Lamb is one of the genre's best characters。 think George Smiley's obnoxious evil twin。 what a hoot。 。。。more

How much do I love this series? Let me count the ways。。。 Another great edition to a funny, engaging series which has left me desperate for the next book。 Jackson Lamb is as repulsive but intriguing as ever, Lady Di gets herself into a tight corner and the slow horses are being targeted by assassins。 What more do you need?

Very Good; Continuing characters: Agents of Slough House; a Russian hit team is taking revenge for one of their own who was killed by taking out past members of Slough House, including one returned from the "dead"; Lamb and company fight back, as only they can, while he also addresses missteps by the head of the service for involving other backers in her actions; leaves many unresolved questions for the next installment Very Good; Continuing characters: Agents of Slough House; a Russian hit team is taking revenge for one of their own who was killed by taking out past members of Slough House, including one returned from the "dead"; Lamb and company fight back, as only they can, while he also addresses missteps by the head of the service for involving other backers in her actions; leaves many unresolved questions for the next installment 。。。more

Another fine read but not quite a 5。 Still some genuine totally non pc laugh out load moments and a decent plot but not enough for the full batch of stars。 To me this one has a feel of an early chess game where pieces are being manoeuvred into position for what must follow。 No pressure but I feel a blockbuster is coming next!

Hav read of all of these books and love the characters, what I also like and some may disagree is that the author is not afraid to kill some of what is perhaps thought of as main characters and this leads to new characters and more interest with the removal of predictability now removed as a character or two is removed from the books。 Was written prior to lockdown but is modern in that current affairs are interleaved within the book。。

Exciting, humorous, perceptive, unsparing on contemporary Britain。 This series must be read in order to avoid utter confusion。 Cliffhanger ending - can't wait for the next instalment。 Exciting, humorous, perceptive, unsparing on contemporary Britain。 This series must be read in order to avoid utter confusion。 Cliffhanger ending - can't wait for the next instalment。 。。。more

When I learned Slough House #7 would soon be available, I immediately set about re-reading #1-6。Time well spent, I assure you。If you’re new to the series, start with Slow Horses (#1) and go on one by one。 It’s spying, it’s London, with skullduggery, high-altitude back-stabbing, plot twists and indelible characters galore。

I received this book from Goodreads in exchange for a review。Slough House is the place where MI5 agents are hidden when they have become an embarrassment。 Each person there has their own career-ending event that put them there。 But somehow these slow horses - as they are referred to- must find a way to overcome their disgraces and act like real intelligence operatives once again。 This time it’s Slough House itself that is under attack。This is the first book in the Slough House Series that I have I received this book from Goodreads in exchange for a review。Slough House is the place where MI5 agents are hidden when they have become an embarrassment。 Each person there has their own career-ending event that put them there。 But somehow these slow horses - as they are referred to- must find a way to overcome their disgraces and act like real intelligence operatives once again。 This time it’s Slough House itself that is under attack。This is the first book in the Slough House Series that I have read。 I didn’t have the benefit of knowing the personalities of the agents or exactly what the Slough House was, before jumping into this latest book。 But it didn’t take long to see this group of inept agents somehow manage to outmaneuver and outperform Russian operatives, as well as countering the attacks that came from within。 My first impression of the book was that it was a slow starter, but after reading to the end, I realize the slow start was necessary to establish the deep, dark, many-pronged plot。 If the reader spent too much time looking one way, something crept up beside them and gave him/her a start。 Every little bit of information leads the reader off in another direction of thinking。 Definitely a book you have to pay attention to…a little mishap, a missed clue, will leave you scratching your head and wondering how you got there, and what did you miss?Well written, exceptionally plotted, and characters that will make you wonder ‘how did they pull that off?’ 。。。more

tGreat series about the “slow horses” in the English secret service, their antics and activities。 Suspenseful, imaginative, interesting, engaging characters。 I haven’t experienced a series like this since i read the Ian Fleming/James Bond books in the ‘60’s。

I didn't actually read this; I listened to Sean Barrett read it for Audible。 He has recorded all of the books in the Slough House series, and I think he has done a marvellous job。 I love the character of Jackson Lamb, who is a latter day Falstaff。 Fat, dirty, greedy, with a great fondness for farting, in this fictional world he is the only senior figure in the British secret service who still retains a little integrity and loyalty。 I didn't actually read this; I listened to Sean Barrett read it for Audible。 He has recorded all of the books in the Slough House series, and I think he has done a marvellous job。 I love the character of Jackson Lamb, who is a latter day Falstaff。 Fat, dirty, greedy, with a great fondness for farting, in this fictional world he is the only senior figure in the British secret service who still retains a little integrity and loyalty。 。。。more

Reading this installment of the Slough House saga, I was struck by the idea that Jackson Lamb, the overseer of this collection of those discarded by the Intelligence Service for various reasons, is a negative image of Nero Wolfe: slovenly, not fastidious, rude not courteous, active on occasion, but, like Nero, shrewd and in control, not giving a damn what others think of him。 He is a survivor from the Col War days of spy-craft, not quite ready for the dustbin。 I have thoroughly enjoyed all the b Reading this installment of the Slough House saga, I was struck by the idea that Jackson Lamb, the overseer of this collection of those discarded by the Intelligence Service for various reasons, is a negative image of Nero Wolfe: slovenly, not fastidious, rude not courteous, active on occasion, but, like Nero, shrewd and in control, not giving a damn what others think of him。 He is a survivor from the Col War days of spy-craft, not quite ready for the dustbin。 I have thoroughly enjoyed all the books。 Just a warning: don't get too attached to any particular character; they may exit at any time。 。。。more

I really enjoy this series and the narrator is great。 I will say that it helps to start at the beginning and even then i had to remind myself of where the last book left off。

I so enjoy this clever series of spy novels。 The latest instalment has just enough based on real events to make it of the moment, but is still a unique spy thriller - with characters that you root for from Slough House。

I cannot recommend this book for people who haven't been following the series, but oh boy, can I ever highly recommend it for those who have! Oh noHaving loved the series to date, I had high expectations for Slough House。 Unfortunately, I found the plot, characters, action and pacing to be underdeveloped and trite。 Too many characters, no narrative depth, cartoonish characterisation, no character development, no real stakes。 It felt far-fetched, ripped from the headlines and far too smug by half。 I really hope Herron can find the magic again for book #8, as this has been one of my favourite spi-fi series of all time。

Tim Armstrong

For the genre, this is near perfect。 The writing is whip smart, witty and wonderfully succinct, there just isn’t a wasted word。For me, this is the best in the series, so far。 A true gem, don’t miss it。

Sooo goodEach book in this series has been better than its predecessor。 The characters are sharply drawn, the dialogue crackles and the various plotlines twist and turn delightfully。 Simply outstanding。
