Summary

'Doctor Watson, Mr Sherlock Holmes' - The most famous introduction in the history of crime fiction takes place in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's A Study in Scarlet, bringing together Sherlock Holmes, the master of science detection, and John H。 Watson, the great detective's faithful chronicler。 This novel not only establishes the magic of the Holmes myth but also provides the reader with a dramatic adventure yarn which ranges from the foggy, gas-lit streets of London to the burning plains of Utah。

The Sign of the Four, the second Holmes novel, presents the detective with one of his greatest challenges。 The theft of the Agna treasure in India forms a catalyst for treachery, deceit and murder。

With these two classic novels, A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of the Four, you have the brilliant foundation of the Sherlock Holmes canon。 Reading pleasure rarely comes any finer。

I liked it, was very easy to read and interesting。 Some Sherlock's deductions are unbelievable, there are things that just can't be know by the hints he gets but well is fiction! I've never read any of Arthur Conan's books because I found Sherlock's movies boring therefore I was pleasantly surprised I found the book more interesting than the movies。 I liked it, was very easy to read and interesting。 Some Sherlock's deductions are unbelievable, there are things that just can't be know by the hints he gets but well is fiction! What a wild ride Sherlock Holmes mysteries are。 They are both intriguing and amusing at the same time。 I think I preferred A Study in Scarlet over The Sign of the Four。 I think the introduction of John Watson to Sherlock Holmes was wonderful, in Scarlet, and the backstory for the mystery was quite intriguing, even when I was wondering what exactly was happening when we jumped back in time to a different continent seemingly out of nowhere。Though these stories are considered classics, and definite What a wild ride Sherlock Holmes mysteries are。 They are both intriguing and amusing at the same time。 I think I preferred A Study in Scarlet over The Sign of the Four。 I think the introduction of John Watson to Sherlock Holmes was wonderful, in Scarlet, and the backstory for the mystery was quite intriguing, even when I was wondering what exactly was happening when we jumped back in time to a different continent seemingly out of nowhere。Though these stories are considered classics, and definitely show the time period in which they were crafted, I think the humour and intellect with which they are written are definitely quite relatable and entertaining。 I will always enjoy Sherlock Holmes as a character, as I believe him to be quite an amusing and unique one, especially given that any character of modern works that is similar to him, is likely, in some way, fashioned after him。 。。。more

I just loved the book but why I gave 3 stars is because the part of the book (the remiscenes of Watson) was great the character introductions were also great (literally this book is the king of character introductions)but the second part(the country of saints) however was not that good (that's why I rated only 3 stars for the book ) while reading the 2nd part i wasn't emotionally connect with the book because of the sudden tone change but still definitely enjoyed it I just loved the book but why I gave 3 stars is because the part of the book (the remiscenes of Watson) was great the character introductions were also great (literally this book is the king of character introductions)but the second part(the country of saints) however was not that good (that's why I rated only 3 stars for the book ) while reading the 2nd part i wasn't emotionally connect with the book because of the sudden tone change but still definitely enjoyed it 。。。more

For Victorian readers, Sherlock Holmes and his adventures must have been a treat。 For the contemporary reader, they are not。 "A Study in Scarlet," as the introduction of Sherlock Holmes as a character, is interesting, but the story and its "Deus ex Mormona" conclusion borders on ridiculous。 "The Sign of Four" is so nonsensical that I can't even remember what it's about。 As this edition of the book is combined, "Scarlet" gets three stars and "Four" gets one。 I am so pleased that I will never have For Victorian readers, Sherlock Holmes and his adventures must have been a treat。 For the contemporary reader, they are not。 "A Study in Scarlet," as the introduction of Sherlock Holmes as a character, is interesting, but the story and its "Deus ex Mormona" conclusion borders on ridiculous。 "The Sign of Four" is so nonsensical that I can't even remember what it's about。 As this edition of the book is combined, "Scarlet" gets three stars and "Four" gets one。 I am so pleased that I will never have to read Sherlock Holmes again in my life。 。。。more

A Study in Scarlet: This famous story was so well-written and clever that it kept me turning the pages as quickly as I could read them。 Before beginning the second part of the book, I didn't know what to expect, but I ended up finding it even more thrilling and entrancing than the first part。 A Study in Scarlet: This famous story was so well-written and clever that it kept me turning the pages as quickly as I could read them。 Before beginning the second part of the book, I didn't know what to expect, but I ended up finding it even more thrilling and entrancing than the first part。 。。。more

I really enjoyed these two stories。 It always kept me guessing and just as puzzled as Watson at how Holmes deduced the mysteries。

I really liked the philosophical touch in Doyle's work。 He quoted Goethe a few times and wrote sentences such as "the country was a perfect hell" and " 'Someone calls him (man) a soul concealed in an animal' "。 He also adds a literary touch to his work with quotes from Nicolas Boileau, Stendhal and Horace。I did not expect to find these aspects in his work, which made me enjoy reading it even more。 I really liked the philosophical touch in Doyle's work。 He quoted Goethe a few times and wrote sentences such as "the country was a perfect hell" and " 'Someone calls him (man) a soul concealed in an animal' "。 He also adds a literary touch to his work with quotes from Nicolas Boileau, Stendhal and Horace。I did not expect to find these aspects in his work, which made me enjoy reading it even more。 。。。more
