Wow。 Going by the scene in the hall, I’m guessing Richard wants Asher too。 Just to top and dominate。 On the other hand, I get the feeling bottoming wasn’t entirely off the table with Jean-Claude。3。 Jean-Claude calling golden tigers and Anita agreeing to not one but two new triumverates。 Again, wow。 I didn’t know Anita having all four marks with Dev would stretch that way。 But I love Dev。 Happy to have him as part of the “till death do we part” group — aka everyone tied to the vampires’ longevity。 4。 Speaking of which, I would really like a chart of all the metaphysical connections。 How many other animals-to-call does Anita have? Jason as her wolf。 Nicky is a bride, not her lion to call, right?!? Does she have other tigers? Ethan? Was there a female red tiger? Was Domino hers?5。 And I need another chart for the polycule。 Who is involved with whom? Obviously Anita, Jean-Claude, Richard (newly joined), Nathaniel, Damien, Micah, Dev, Angel。 Are there others or are they lovers outside the polycule, like Wicked Truth。 Then there is the emergency food。 Where does Ethan fall?6。 Loved the grown up version of Graham。 He was a good boy, yielding to Richard。7。 I need that phone call with Jason。 Hate that he is heartbroken, but would love to see him return home。8。 Asher is trying to be better, but he is still trying on the nerves。 They need to kill off his animal-to-call。 He’s like an anchor around his ankle dragging him down。9。 Nice amount of Edward (as he often takes over books)。 Love Edward’s dynamic with Peter。 Hoping to see more of them in the next book。 What exposure to lycanthropy means for them。10。 No resolution on either the RPIT case or the mysterious “dragon” attacking Jean-Claude。 Was this book significantly shorter or did all the lead-up just take forever?11。 The ritual part of the 4th mark seemed almost anti-climatic in it’s simplicity。 But it was so overdo, it’s a relief。 Richard is back in the fold for better or for worse。12。 Richard a doctorate, teaching college, and out to his boss as a wolf。 Big strides。 And he was dealing with the polycule complexity better than I would have expected。 。。。more

Hamilton is fighting to make sure we not only get 2 books for the 30th anniversary of the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, but to make sure that we get book 30 before the end of the year。 I can see why: this is a two parter。(How to review the book without being spoilerific? Um。 Hmm。)Okay, intentional SPOILER: there's a short conversational summary of the DC trip - a Senate hearing, if I remember correctly - that was going to be its own novel maybe a decade ago。Therapy and dealing with persona Hamilton is fighting to make sure we not only get 2 books for the 30th anniversary of the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, but to make sure that we get book 30 before the end of the year。 I can see why: this is a two parter。(How to review the book without being spoilerific? Um。 Hmm。)Okay, intentional SPOILER: there's a short conversational summary of the DC trip - a Senate hearing, if I remember correctly - that was going to be its own novel maybe a decade ago。Therapy and dealing with personal issues comes up repeatedly in this novel, and with the return of one major character we're seeing some dangling threads get picked up。 The wedding is coming up, we're seeing Anita in contact with her family of origin, and some alarming facts from her childhood that were even kept from her father。 There is a big bad in this novel who is using the fact that folks are traveling in for the wedding as part of their master plan。 But given all personal turmoil and politicking amongst the factions, it's not the biggest concern。 Indeed, in this book it's the "sh*t shoveling" - as Blake would put it - not the sex that is interrupting defensive plans。There's one major throw down, and it's very worrisome, but it's in no way the main boss fight。 eek。In a series that has suffered from a Superpower of the Month Club syndrome, has likely had a drinking games made for clichés, and even had one "be our guest editor" contest held by the publisher, I'm getting the feeling that the wedding will be the last shark jumped。 I may be wrong, but there's something about the last few chapters of "Smolder" that gave me the impression。I'll be sad if the series ends, because it's been as fun as it's been an adventure in eye-rolling。 But if most of the surviving characters are in a better place emotionally, I'll be satisfied。 。。。more

Smolder by Laurell K。 Hamilton is the twenty-ninth book in the series with our Preternatural U。S。 Marshal and vampire hunter Anita Blake。 It’s not necessary to read them all (it’s a pretty long series) but it does help a little。 But saying that I’ve not read them all, I’ve only read her recent ones, and I managed to keep abreast of who is who and what is what 😉 Anita Blake is preparing for her wedding to the vampire king of America Jean-Claude。 (They’ve been an item/couple for many years, and yo Smolder by Laurell K。 Hamilton is the twenty-ninth book in the series with our Preternatural U。S。 Marshal and vampire hunter Anita Blake。 It’s not necessary to read them all (it’s a pretty long series) but it does help a little。 But saying that I’ve not read them all, I’ve only read her recent ones, and I managed to keep abreast of who is who and what is what 😉 Anita Blake is preparing for her wedding to the vampire king of America Jean-Claude。 (They’ve been an item/couple for many years, and you’ll see their relationship in most of the books) So the story starts with Anita’s best friend U。S。 Marshall Ted Forrester。 Whilst he is admiring himself in his best man clothing, Anita gets a phone call from the local police。 They think the Sunshine Murderer has hit again。 But, that’s not the only thing going on in St。 Louis。 An ancient being has arrived to challenge Jean-Claude for his vampire crown。 And it’s not looking good for Jean-Claude! He might be the most powerful vampire around, but he’s still no match for the newcomer! Will he lose his crown? Then you have both humans and vampires thinking neither one should be with the other! Humans think Anita will take the vampire’s side over theirs, and the vampires think Anita will eventually turn their king against them! Although I’ve not read all the books in this series, the ones I’ve read have given me the impression Anita has become a pretty powerful entity, she has many powers at her fingertips, and this book sees her utilising most of them…。。So, what with keeping her vampire partner alive and on his thrown, she’s keeping humans happy, the vampires are needing constant reassurance she’s not out for his powers, she’s also trying to work out who the Sunshine murder is and can she catch them this time? Anita did seem to be juggling quite a few emotional balls in the air as well! Did she need to be? I didn’t think so! But that’s just me 🤷🏻♀️ There are a few spicy moments 😉 but they don’t slow us down too much (nothing as distracting when the MC’s getting carried away with page after page 😉) I keep meaning to go to the beginning of this series, I’d love to read how far she’s come, and I’d like to know when Anita and Jean-Claude first met。I’m also getting the feeling this was a set up for the next book! A few of the threads that could have been sorted weren’t! And I did feel the ending a little vague! But I did enjoy the book immensely, the author can definitely weave a tale, twenty nine books in and the character still had plenty to give。 Will Anita and Jean-Claude get married or will the the Sunshine murderer take precedence? Will the vampires and humans get their wishes? I’m definitely recommending this book if your a fan of the author, and I’m suggesting if you have the time, go to the start of the series and work your way through。 🦋 。。。more

I was really looking forward to Smolder but once again the relentlessly didactic polyamory and therapy cheerleading completely overshadow what little storylines remain, take out the neurotic whining from supporting cast and this could be a great short story; covering a tense 24 hour period and leading into the next novel, Slay。 (masochist that I am, I will of course be reading Slay and am already hopeful it will improve on Smolder :-)Also - I wish Anita would just kill Kane already!

This story all happened in one day。 It's setting up for the next book。 Even saying that, I feel as if some of it was rushed。 That just may be my feelings about Richard and Asher and the relationship scenes unfolding the way they did。 I don't trust either of them at all to be good/right for John Claude or Anita。 I almost feel as if they are being pushed together for the story and not because it's what should happen。 I like the new bbeg, but again, it feels like he came from nowhere。 I like where This story all happened in one day。 It's setting up for the next book。 Even saying that, I feel as if some of it was rushed。 That just may be my feelings about Richard and Asher and the relationship scenes unfolding the way they did。 I don't trust either of them at all to be good/right for John Claude or Anita。 I almost feel as if they are being pushed together for the story and not because it's what should happen。 I like the new bbeg, but again, it feels like he came from nowhere。 I like where the story is moving, but as a stand-alone book in the series, it doesn't work。 It's almost as if these two were meant to be one story, and it was split in half。 It feels unfinished because in almost all of the other books, the crime is solved, and the bad guy is found out。 This one didn't have that。 I still can't wait to see what unfolds next, and I'm sure the next book will complete this story and make it great。 I still love the writing and storytelling。 。。。more

"Smolder" is a 2021 young adult novel by Brenna Yovanoff。 The story follows Darcy, an outcast teenage girl who has the ability to set things on fire with her mind。 When a string of fires break out in their small town, Darcy becomes the prime suspect。 To clear her name, she must team up with her former best friend to uncover the truth behind the mysterious fires。
According to reviews, "Smolder" is a dark and thrilling supernatural tale that explores themes of friendship, identity, and acceptance。 Readers praise Yovanoff's atmospheric writing style, complex characters, and intriguing plot twists。 However, some also note that the book can be slow-paced and may not be suitable for readers who are uncomfortable with darker themes。
