Summary

From the critically acclaimed author of The Downstairs Girl comes the richly imagined story of Valora and Jamie Luck, twin British - Chinese acrobats traveling aboard the Titanic on its ill fated maiden voyage。

Southampton, 1912: Seventeen-year-old British-Chinese Valora Luck has quit her job and smuggled herself aboard the Titanic with two goals in mind: to reunite with her twin brother Jamie--her only family now that both their parents are dead--and to convince a part-owner of the Ringling Brothers Circus to take the twins on as acrobats。 Quick-thinking Val talks her way into opulent firstclass accommodations and finds Jamie with a group of fellow Chinese laborers in third class。 But in the rigidly stratified world of the luxury liner, Val's ruse can only last so long, and after two long years apart, it's unclear if Jamie even wants the life Val proposes。 Then, one moonless night in the North Atlantic, the unthinkable happens--the supposedly unsinkable ship is dealt a fatal blow--and Val and her companions suddenly find themselves in a race to survive。

Stacey Lee, master of historical fiction, brings a fresh perspective to an infamous tragedy, loosely inspired by the recently uncovered account of six Titanic survivors of Chinese descent。

"Luck of the Titanic" by Stacey Lee, is an amazing historical fiction novel! The main character, Valora Luck, is an acrobat with dreams of leaving England behind, and becoming a circus performer in New York with her twin brother, Jamie "Virtue" Luck。 Due to numerous circumstances, she finds herself aboard the Titanic as a stowaway。 Her brother is also on the Titanic, and has a job shoveling coal。The book is a definite "page turner"。 I read the entire novel in a day。 I felt compassion for the cha "Luck of the Titanic" by Stacey Lee, is an amazing historical fiction novel! Okay yall。 I went in with major expectations because historical and Titanic, so I was hoping for something really good。 And, honestly, this is really good。 It had the right amount of anticipation going for it in the story while making the characters we were following feel real。 I received an ecopy of this through Netgalley; however, all opinions are my own。

This is a beautiful story of sibling relationships, fighting prejudices, and unlikely friendships。 While stories of the Titanic can commonly be found, a story of the Titanic from the point of view of a British-Chinese girl has never been told。 Valora's story is one that will stay long with you upon reaching the end, and she's a character that you will view as a friend。Valor's had spunk, sass, and wit and was an absolutely magnificent point of view character。 She reminded me a lot of myself and J This is a beautiful story of sibling relationships, fighting prejudices, and unlikely friendships。 While stories of the Titanic can commonly be found, a story of the Titanic from the point of view of a British-Chinese girl has never been told。 Valora's story is one that will stay long with you upon reaching the end, and she's a character that you will view as a friend。Valor's had spunk, sass, and wit and was an absolutely magnificent point of view character。 She reminded me a lot of myself and Jamie reminded me of my sister。 I loved how deep Lee dove into the relationships between siblings, and I think it brought some semblance of healing to the current frayed relationship between my sister and me。 Family relationships (especially siblings) are something I think we need more stories about! Highly recommend to those who love historical fiction and family stories。 An absolutely amazing read。 。。。more

I don't read many historicals, but if you set a book on the Titanic, I am immediately intrigued。 When I found out about this book and that it was from an Asian point of view, that made it a must read for me。 This was my first read of a book from this author and I thought the writing style was very easy to read and get into。While I did enjoy this one as a whole, there were definite things I didn't enjoy including how the main character reacted to certain things within this book。 I did however, en I don't read many historicals, but if you set a book on the Titanic, I am immediately intrigued。 When I found out about this book and that it was from an Asian point of view, that made it a must read for me。 This was my first read of a book from this author and I thought the writing style was very easy to read and get into。While I did enjoy this one as a whole, there were definite things I didn't enjoy including how the main character reacted to certain things within this book。 I did however, enjoy several of the other characters we meet。 As we get closer to the time the ship hits the iceberg, I became very invested in the characters and I couldn't put the book down。 I wondered if any of them would perish or if they would survive。 I wondered where and how this story would end。 When I got there, I was definitely surprising and unexpected and even after turning the last page, I am still wondering about certain characters。I was very glad for the Author's note in the back and I definitely want to learn more about the survivors that inspired this story。Thank you very much to G。P。 Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers and Edelweiss for providing me with an advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review。 This does not in any way affect my thoughts on this book。 。。。more

Loosely based on the historic disaster, Luck of the Titanic delves into the (true) story of the eight Chinese men aboard the doomed ship, bringing them to life with fictional narratives (after all, little is known about these men) and focusing especially on the racism and culture of discrimination they would have experienced。 Stacey Lee seamlessly marries fact with fiction, weaving together the lives of actual passengers (Albert Ankeny Stewart, an investor in the Ringling Brothers Circus) and cr Loosely based on the historic disaster, Luck of the Titanic delves into the (true) story of the eight Chinese men aboard the doomed ship, bringing them to life with fictional narratives (after all, little is known about these men) and focusing especially on the racism and culture of discrimination they would have experienced。 Stacey Lee seamlessly marries fact with fiction, weaving together the lives of actual passengers (Albert Ankeny Stewart, an investor in the Ringling Brothers Circus) and crew members (Captain Smith and J。 Bruce Ismay) with those of her fictional characters。 The most notable of which: the Luck twins, Valora and James。Val and James arrive aboard the Titanic under different stars。 Under the Chinese Exclusion Act, Valora can’t enter the US or board the ill-fated ship without special documentation。 With her employer (Mrs。 Sloan) recently deceased, gone are Valora’s chances of legally traveling in the 1st class cabin Mrs。 Sloan had booked for their voyage。 James wants nothing less than inside the US (a place even more hostile toward the Chinese than his home country Great Britain)。 Well, maybe James wants one thing less, a return to the acrobat life his sister so desires。 James is a sailor and on his way to South America (with his mates) to fulfill a work contract。Valora, though, will do whatever it takes (including sneaking aboard the ship) to convince her brother that he was made for something more than the boiler room。 And as Lady Luck would have it, Albert Ankeny Stewart (just the man who can get them a permit into the US and a spot with the Ringling Brothers Circus) is aboard Titanic。 Now, all Val needs is to orchestrate an audition—and convince her mule-headed brother that the future she envisions for them is better than the one he’s accepted for himself。The pace is sharp with descriptive elements that will make you feel as though you’re walking along Scotland Road (the spine of the 3rd class deck)。 The reader can’t help but feel the looming countdown to the inevitable doom。 Luck of the Titanic inescapably (because it has to) ends in disaster。 Yet Lee’s focus is on the (excluded from history and true) story of the Chinese sailors and that of (fictional) siblings Valora and James。 Making Luck of the Titanic, above all, a story that addresses and exposes discrimination, but also one of friendships, sibling bonds, and even hope found in dark places。Luck of the Titanic shows invariably the tragedy of the historic disaster but even more so (and with a visceral punch to your emotions) it highlights the tragedy of racial discrimination。 If you think you’ve read every variation of the Titanic story, Luck of the Titanic delivers something wholly new。 I can’t say this enough, this book is not to be missed。 。。。more

Along the way she meets her brothers newfound family and many other kind hearted people that help her along the way。This book was so captivating that I finished it within a matter of hours。 There is always a turn, a subtle mystery, or a hint at a detail about a characters past that keeps you turning the page。 I fell in lover with every character and the things that drove them。 It was impossible not to feel for them。The story was ultimately one of family, and the lengths that you would go for them(or they would go for you)。 Now don't be mistaken, Lee displays that family is very, very flawed in her writing, highlighting what real families can look like。 It was not an unrealistic portrayal。I appreciated that Stacey Lee highlighted a time in American history that is typically glossed over。 She includes the historical law, The Chinese Exclusion Act, and displays the hatred and bias towards Asians at this time。 Potential spoiler, but there was a part in the book where the characters were referred to as "Japs", displaying the ignorance tied the hatred。The serious subjects in the book were paired nicely with the subtle hints of humor that were sprinkled in。 Oh, and the slow burn romance。 Slow burn romance absolutely haves my heart。 It was absolutely beautiful and intense。Slight spoiler ahead:Be ready to have this book rip your heart out at the very last second。 I cried and it took so long for me to collect myself。 。。。more

Stacey Lee is, in my opinion, one of the reigning monarchs of YA historical fiction-although it isn't my favorite genre, I will, without fail, pick up anything she writes。 Do I care at all about the Titanic? Not really。 Did I read this anyway? OF COURSE。As is probably common for those of us who went to school in the United States, I did not know about the Chinese people aboard the Titanic, or how terribly they were treated (though I am not surprised, of course, given the attitudes at the time of the Titanic's sailing as well as in the present day), and Lee graciously takes the time in a few author's notes to educate readers on the actual details that are known about these people。 As with all of her other works, she gives us an engaging, entertaining historical fiction story that sheds light on people whose stories are not often at the forefront of historical fiction (or historical fact)。The main character, Valora, is an acrobat who is trying to connect with her brother in the wake of her father's death and, due to some extenuating circumstances, ends up stowing away on the Titanic to do so。 Of course what actually happens to the ship is not a surprise, but the events of Valora's story up until that fateful end are really interesting-she is an acrobat and wants to revive her act with her brother in America。 Along the way, she impersonates a first class passenger, makes some new friends, and causes a stir amongst the passengers with her talents and her eccentric personality。 I thoroughly enjoyed her reunion with her brother, her attempts to right the wrongs of racist passengers and crew members, and her unexpected new friends。The ending, however, was like a punch straight to my heart-obviously, we know what happens to the ship-I won't give away what happens to the characters I grew to love, but I will say that with any tragedy there is great sadness。 Still, a worthwhile read-just be prepared to cry。 。。。more

Because of that, it showed the issues when it came to the class system and racism。 It was hard for me to fully connect with her but I understood her passion for wanting her brother to be with her。 Even if her family didn’t always care as much as she did, she still held on and embraced them, flaws and all。 I also liked that she cared about those she hardly knew too。 It really showed off her kindness。At times the book did slow in areas and then it picked up towards the end。 Some added twists felt unnecessary like the really minor romance for Valora。 I sometimes feel like romance is added for the sake of the genre when it comes to YA。 I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about the ending either。 It is definitely heartbreaking though。Overall, this was a good book。 This was my first book by this author and she definitely writes historical fiction well as it’s not one of my favorite genres but I did like it for this one。Thank you to the publisher and BookishFirst for a finished copy of the book to read and review! 。。。more

It’s been a while since I read a story set on the Titanic。 (The last I can recall was when I was a child, and I can’t even remember the title)。 I’ve always found myself drawn to and interested in this tragic event, and it was really cool to see how Stacey Lee told a story that felt like it fit right in with the existing knowledge I had of it。 As always, her ability to center the story on an Asian character (or in this case, characters) and open up a brand new perspective was on point。

Thank you NetGalley and G。P。 Putnam’s Sons Books For Young Reads for this eARC! I love a good historical fiction and when I saw the description of this one, I knew I needed to read it。 Valora is a young woman trying to join the Ringling Brothers as an acrobat。 The way she does it? By smuggling herself onto the Titanic, where her twin brother and show companion are working。 Being a stowaway isn’t her only problem—she’s Chinese and Chinese people aren’t being allowed into America because of the Chinese Exclusion Act。 As Valora navigates the Titanic, the Titanic navigates the Atlantic until that fateful night that everything changes。 Wow! I have to say this: I am ashamed for not knowing there were Chinese people on the Titanic。 Stacey Lee, thank you for bringing this to my attention! This story was beautiful。 In a way, it was hard to read because I *knew* what was going to happen, without knowing what was going to happen。 I kept waiting for the moment the Titanic hit the iceberg (I don’t think that counts as a spoiler)。 Since I was anticipating that, it made it hard to focus on everything leading up to it。 With that being said, the story was really interesting。 I became invested in Valora and Jamie’s relationship since I’m a twin and I get it。 I loved how dedicated they were to each other, since that’s how I feel about my twin! I also thought the overall concept was interesting; Valora could have been anything, but she was an acrobat。 I also thought the writing was compelling—It was easy to get sucked into the story。 The only two things that I thought needed some improvement were the pacing of the story and the relationship between the MC and a certain character。 To be fair, the author had a certain amount of time that couldn’t really be changed。 It felt like it slowed down a lot after the first events and then, of course, everything picked up with a bang。 I also wanted there to be more relationship building between the MC and a certain character, but again there was limited time and that wasn’t really Valora’s purpose on the Titanic。This book was a solid 4 stars for me。 I’d highly recommend this book if you like historical fiction like Code Name Verity (or even if you don’t!)。 I promise you won’t want to put it down (I know that I didn’t)。 。。。more

It is 2:30 in the morning and my eyes hurt from crying。 I am beyond impressed with how beautiful this story is, and also how Stacey Lee managed to bring in much needed historical context。 Lee pulled at my heartstrings with every single relationship that Valora had。 From the bright eyed hope of Olly and Wink to the hard exterior of Fong, Valora managed to make an impact on every single one of these characters, and also on me。 I always like to think that I would be a selfless person, but I don't t It is 2:30 in the morning and my eyes hurt from crying。 I am beyond impressed with how beautiful this story is, and also how Stacey Lee managed to bring in much needed historical context。 Lee pulled at my heartstrings with every single relationship that Valora had。 From the bright eyed hope of Olly and Wink to the hard exterior of Fong, Valora managed to make an impact on every single one of these characters, and also on me。 I always like to think that I would be a selfless person, but I don't think I would have the strength to do what Valora did towards the end of the book to save those that she cared about。 I honestly almost DNFed this book because it was pretty slow in the middle, but I am so glad that I continued to read because it has quickly become one of my new favorites。 I can't wait to recommend it to all of my friends and go on the emotional journey with them all over again。 。。。more
