Summary

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Presumed Innocent and The Last Trial returns with a riveting legal thriller in which a reckless private detective is embroiled in a fraught police scandal。

For as long as Lucia Gomez has been the police chief in the city of Highland Isle, near Kindle County, she has known that any woman in law enforcement must walk a precarious line between authority and camaraderie to gain respect。  She has maintained a spotless reputation—until now。 Three male police officers have accused her of soliciting sex in exchange for promotions to higher ranks。 With few people left who she can trust, Chief Gomez turns to an old friend, Rik Dudek, to act as her attorney in the federal grand jury investigation, insisting to Rik that the accusations against her are part of an ugly smear campaign designed to destroy her career and empower her enemies—both outside the police force and within。。

Clarice “Pinky” Granum spent most of her youth experimenting with an impressive array of drugs and failing out of various professions, including the police academy。 Pinky knows that in the eyes of most people, she's nothing but a screwup—but she doesn't trust most people's opinions anyway。 Moreover, she finally has a respectable-enough job as a licensed P。I。 working for Rik on his roster of mostly minor cases, like workman's comp, DUIs and bar fights。 Rik's shabby office and even shabbier cases are a far cry from the kinds of high-profile criminal matters Pinky became familiar with in the law office of her grandfather, Sandy Stern。 But Rik and Pinky feel that Chief Gomez’s case, which has attracted national attention, is their chance to break into the legal big leagues。

Guided by her gut instinct and razor-sharp investigative skills, Pinky dives headfirst into a twisted scandal that will draw her into the deepest recesses of the city’s criminal networks, as well as the human mind。 But she will need every scrap of tenacity and courage to unravel the dark secrets those closest to her are determined to keep hidden。

I enjoyed the first book in this series, but found that later ones were so dry they were tough to get through, so I was a bit apprehensive when I got an early copy of this book。 But I was so pleasantly surprised and ended up really enjoying this! The story was intriguing, and I loved the main character, and I loved the sex-positive attitude of the female characters。 I think I was expecting a tiny bit more drama from the end, but this was without a doubt my favorite of the series since the first。

Many thanks to NetGalley, Grand Central Publishing and Hachette Audio for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of the latest legal thriller by Scott Turow - a long time favorite - and wonderfully narrated by Helen Laser。 5 stars!Lucia Gomez has always had a spotless reputation as police chief of Highland Isle near Kindle County。 But now 3 patrol officers have accused her of extorting them for sex in exchange for promotions。 Chief Gomez hires local attorney Rik Dudek to help fight the charges。 Many thanks to NetGalley, Grand Central Publishing and Hachette Audio for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of the latest legal thriller by Scott Turow - a long time favorite - and wonderfully narrated by Helen Laser。 5 stars!Lucia Gomez has always had a spotless reputation as police chief of Highland Isle near Kindle County。 But now 3 patrol officers have accused her of extorting them for sex in exchange for promotions。 Chief Gomez hires local attorney Rik Dudek to help fight the charges。 Rik is a small town guy, with the shabby office and clients to prove it。 His PI is Pinky Granum, Sandy Stern's granddaughter。 Pinky flunked out of the police academy and relishes her new role in helping to prove the Chief's innocence。 She's also intrigued with her mysterious next-door neighbor and his nighttime activities, which leads her to investigate a former police officer turned real estate magnate。 I loved the latest edition to the Kindle County legal series, although if you haven't read any of them, they are all stand alones as well。 Pinky is a great character and I hope we get more of her in the future。 Turow is the master at the legal thriller genre and this one is no exception。 There's a lot going on in this book but everything comes to a great conclusion。 I switched between the audio and digital versions and the narration was wonderful as well。 Highly recommended! 。。。more

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through netgalley。com。 I am leaving this review voluntarily。 This is a fast paced twisty turny legal thriller with a quirky ADHD private investigator。 Pinky wanted to be a cop but despite her quick mind, her crack shot she got booted from the academy when she failed a drug test。 Now she works as a private eye。 She also has a new neighbor who she has latched onto as someone to keep an eye on。 She follows him, and listens to her connecting wal I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through netgalley。com。 I am leaving this review voluntarily。 This is a fast paced twisty turny legal thriller with a quirky ADHD private investigator。 Pinky wanted to be a cop but despite her quick mind, her crack shot she got booted from the academy when she failed a drug test。 Now she works as a private eye。 She also has a new neighbor who she has latched onto as someone to keep an eye on。 She follows him, and listens to her connecting wall hoping to figure out what bugs her about this guy。 Lucia Gomez is the Chief of Police and is being investigated for sexual harassment。 She claims her encounters were consensual and happened long before the witnesses say they did。 She claims that an ex cop turned real estate tycoon is the real person behind wanting her gone from the force。 Then a damning photo comes up showing Lucia in a compromising position。 Its up to Pinky to figure out who is telling the truth, the Chief or the other cops。 I have alway been a fan of Turow's writing and this was no exception。 I loved the characters, the shady cops, and the manipulative twists and turns。 I wasn't really sure how this would all end and I was happily surprised。 I am a huge fan of Pinky and really hope that Turow decides to do more with this character。 She is too good for one book。 。。。more

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to review this work in advance for no compensation other than an honest review。In the 35 years of fiction works, Scott had let me down only once; Testimony。He was going through a divorce and perhaps his frame of mind was otherwise occupied。This book feels a second swing and miss。His main characters have "aged out" and this is a desperate attempt to cling to what brought Scott to our attention。I loved "Pinky" in the Last Trial。 She was a change of pace who Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to review this work in advance for no compensation other than an honest review。In the 35 years of fiction works, Scott had let me down only once; Testimony。He was going through a divorce and perhaps his frame of mind was otherwise occupied。This book feels a second swing and miss。His main characters have "aged out" and this is a desperate attempt to cling to what brought Scott to our attention。I loved "Pinky" in the Last Trial。 She was a change of pace who punched up the story。 Sadly, I think I misread her。 Scott did not use her sparingly as much as I feel now, he didn't know how to use her。 For a first time, many of these characters resonated two dimensional。Scott is vastly smarter than I am so the mystery always leaves me missing something until his reveal。I will continue recommending him ( although so many of my friends have left him behind ) But, I think a change of scenery may be needed or we will have the third strike and I will be out 。。。more

I was excited to read this book。 Scott Turow in my mind is one of the exemplary courtroom drama writers and there aren't enough of them to feed my appetite。 The cast of characters in Suspect are interesting and varied, but I quickly found to be typical, like those I've read in other books--the hard and driven female Chief of Police who has to work harder than male because of her gender, the quirky female investigator covered in tattoos and colorful hair with a difficult personal life that become I was excited to read this book。 Scott Turow in my mind is one of the exemplary courtroom drama writers and there aren't enough of them to feed my appetite。 The cast of characters in Suspect are interesting and varied, but I quickly found to be typical, like those I've read in other books--the hard and driven female Chief of Police who has to work harder than male because of her gender, the quirky female investigator covered in tattoos and colorful hair with a difficult personal life that becomes part of the story, and the smart lawyer whose job it is to protect his client and direct his investigator。 The more I read, the more I realized the focus was too much on the relationships among the characters with not enough time on the courtroom drama I wanted。 Though I gave this 3/5 stars, I may give the next Turow novel a try, hoping to get back to the clever intrigue of courtroom shenanigans that originally drew me to this author。 。。。more

When last I read Scott Turow, legal favorite Sandy Stern was facing his last trial, looking back on his life as he contemplated the ravages of aging。 In this novel, Turow takes readers back to Kindle County and the adventures of Sandy’s granddaughter, Pinky, a unique individual who works as a PI for a local attorney。 The police chief of Highland Isle has been accused of soliciting sex from some of her subordinates in exchange for promotions and Pinky’s boss is defending her。 The investigation in When last I read Scott Turow, legal favorite Sandy Stern was facing his last trial, looking back on his life as he contemplated the ravages of aging。 In this novel, Turow takes readers back to Kindle County and the adventures of Sandy’s granddaughter, Pinky, a unique individual who works as a PI for a local attorney。 The police chief of Highland Isle has been accused of soliciting sex from some of her subordinates in exchange for promotions and Pinky’s boss is defending her。 The investigation into this case unravels a web of corruption involving a former police officer now turned real estate mogul。 As a parallel, or maybe related interest, Pinky is obsessed with her mysterious new neighbor and vows to find out his secrets as well。 As always, Turow is at his best in depicting courtroom and investigative scenes。 They are fast paced and engrossing。 I thought Pinky’s contemplations about her love and social relationships a bit slow and repetitive。 I found myself skimming a bit, something I typically have not done in past Turow novels。 The plot is interesting, the characters, many of whom are unlikable, richly drawn。 I’m looking forward to more stories featuring Pinky。 She is much more capable than the initial introduction to her makes her seem。 I started out not liking her very much, but by the end she had endeared herself to me。 Although this is part of a loose series (The Kindle County Books), it is not at all necessary to have read any of the prior ones。 Although readers who have may enjoy the brief cameo appearances by Sandy Stern。 Thanks to @netgalley and grandcentralpublishing for the ARC 。。。more

This was okay…and in making that selection, I am being generous to author Scott Turow’s ability to construct an interesting narrative around even a stinker of plot like this one。 The primary character, PI Pinky, seems SO contrived and predictable it is almost painful to read the portions devoted to her (of which most of the book revolves)。 There is little that is likable about her and not too much that is agreeable about her story overall, including her thin ties to other Turow characters。 The o This was okay…and in making that selection, I am being generous to author Scott Turow’s ability to construct an interesting narrative around even a stinker of plot like this one。 The primary character, PI Pinky, seems SO contrived and predictable it is almost painful to read the portions devoted to her (of which most of the book revolves)。 There is little that is likable about her and not too much that is agreeable about her story overall, including her thin ties to other Turow characters。 The other characters fare equally poorly in terms of development。 The ‘bad guy’ is a broadly drawn “crooked cop” turned drug addict and successful local investor。 The female police chief, central to the story, gets a lot of text but little real development and Pinky’s lover and ex-lover are both muddled and unengaging characters。 On the subject of which - unengaging - the sex in this book is beyond boring and mostly exploitive。 What is good about this book? The too few courtroom scenes are excellent。 They move with speed and interest and demonstrate where Turow’s skills are best suited。 I would gladly read more about lawyer Rik, not so much Private Investigator Pinky。 。。。more

What always sells me on Scott Turow's books, is the presence of Pinky, a private investigator for her relative, a lawyer tasked with defending his old friend the police chief who has been accused of sexually harrassing and soliciting sex on the job。 I think in this character, Turow has created someone who captures the reader's imagination and who really adds a wit and humour to this legal thriller, where her incisive intelligence carries the day。Pinky's quirkiness combined with her dogged need t What always sells me on Scott Turow's books, is the presence of Pinky, a private investigator for her relative, a lawyer tasked with defending his old friend the police chief who has been accused of sexually harrassing and soliciting sex on the job。 I think in this character, Turow has created someone who captures the reader's imagination and who really adds a wit and humour to this legal thriller, where her incisive intelligence carries the day。Pinky's quirkiness combined with her dogged need to get to the bottom of things propels the narrative forward at a rate of knots。 Partly told in the coartroom , but mostly on the streets from Pinky's point of view, we see the sexism and corruption of a police force left to breed its own rules for too long。 With strands woven seamlessly together we are taken on a journey, with Pinky, that is compelling and thought provoking。 I read this over only a couple of nights。 。。。more

Scott Turow, Suspect, Swift Press 2022。Thank you, NetGalley, for providing me with this uncorrected proof in exchange for an honest review。 It is a long time since I read Scott Turow’s Presumed Innocent for the first time, and not so long ago that I re-read what I still believe is a very smart novel with an excellent twist。 I hesitate to refer to the twist, as that phrase has become so trite with so many novels claimed to have such a feature – or even several – that it is no longer something I Scott Turow, Suspect, Swift Press 2022。Thank you, NetGalley, for providing me with this uncorrected proof in exchange for an honest review。 It is a long time since I read Scott Turow’s Presumed Innocent for the first time, and not so long ago that I re-read what I still believe is a very smart novel with an excellent twist。 I hesitate to refer to the twist, as that phrase has become so trite with so many novels claimed to have such a feature – or even several – that it is no longer something I find particularly enthralling。 Of course, when there really is a twist, when it is placed there for a purpose (as in Presumed Innocent) other than a headline in a review, I am as impressed as anyone。 Perhaps my admiration for the smartness of Presumed Innocent spoiled me for Suspect, although thankfully it does not have a confected twist! Rather, this is a straightforward investigation of the possible set up of the Chief Inspector, Lucia Gomez-Barrerra, during mayoral election year in an American community of around 120,000 people。 Pinky is a private investigator with attitude, a woman in her thirties who is free from family or love commitments。 She is dedicated to her work and has a strong sense of justice which she pursues, sometimes to her detriment。 Although she has admirable qualities, I found her also a somewhat harsh character and difficult to related to wholeheartedly。 The story is told from her perspective, and alongside her work, she investigates her neighbour。 His behaviour in his adjacent flat and the hours he leaves, and returns, are a constant source of curiosity to her ,and to the reader。 Their relationship progresses as the case unfolds and provides another dimension to Pinky’s character。 Also involved in the case is one of her former lovers。 The relationship between Tonya Eo and Pinky, is an excellent foil to the process of investigating the Chief, her subordinates and former subordinates, and a criminal with a range of activities that complicate the probe。The attention to the importance of sexism in the workplace, the case, and the protagonists' lives is a positive feature of the novel。 Also, the subtle introduction of the way in which Covid 19 has impacted on individuals and communities was a positive feature of the writing。 The story has some complexities, and the detail about the way in which the investigation proceeds, together with Turow’s legal knowledge, makes this an interesting read。 However, unlike my enthusiasm for Presumed Innocent, this novel did not grip me, and I felt somewhat disappointed。 。。。more

I have mixed feelings about this one。 The story was interesting but way too long。 I liked the main character, a PI for a lawyer working to exonerate a female police chef that is accusing of sexual harrasment。 This is more a detective story and less of a legal thriller, which is what I was expecting。
